Massive abscess surgery and tooth removal

Just wanted to say hang in there, I’m so sorry you are going through this. Have you considered syringe feeding last thing at night 11.00 pm then first thing in a morning 6 am as having to wake up every three hours you are nit getting any sleep and you need to stay well to care for Frankie. having had a dental piggie myself I know how exhausting it can be. Take no notice of your family, people just don’t understand, you are doing your very best for Frankie and that’s what counts x

Thanks so much for your kindness! I have cut the night feed back so I get 6 hours sleep and feel a lot better today, Frankie’s weight hasn’t dropped so fingers crossed. 😊

Does this look normal for day 6/7 of an abscess drain?

He’s still not eating anything on his own other than oats and mushed veg. Chewing is so painful for him even on maximum dose of metacam and culture tested antibiotic. Can’t get back to the vet until Monday as it’s 6 hours away.

So sorry for spamming the forums, but I am freaking out, away from England and nobody to ask until Monday. It's day 7 and still he's not eating by himself and hides most of the day, still long-low-purrs when cuddled and feisty when telling me he doesn't want the flushing of his wound, but otherwise seems very fed up and lethargic.

What is the normal recovery time for this kind of op; to start eating on his own? We're on day 7 post op, photos above from yesterday.

I know you're not vets but to some degree the vets know less than the piggy parents when it comes to things like this, as they are not at home caring for them all day and night!

Thanks again and sorry to go on!

Obviously I’m not a vet. The wound looks ok not red and swollen 👍🏻

My Pepper didn’t eat properly until 4 days after stopping the Zithromax. He’s still not putting on loads of weight still. Keep going until Monday. You are doing great. You are keeping him alive while the abscess and molar extraction gets better. ❤️

He came out and pretended to eat hay today with his (ex) cage mate, couldn't eat it but was putting on a show, which is a start!

I was really expecting him to eat hay and grass by now, but he still can't chew. Thanks for the kindess and encouragement. :luv:

It can take many weeks for a piggie who has had dental surgery to be able to eat hay, in the meantime support feed him till he has healed is sadly a must for now 🤞
Thanks so much for your reply, that makes me feel a lot better. I don't mind feeding him at all, he's a pleasure, I just want to know we're going in the right direction, it's frustrating as hell when they don't improve after days of care.

An update on my piggy Frankie.

Took him back to the exotics vet and his abscess was fantastic, no pus or infection left. 🥳

His jaw and teeth were a mess though, so he had a dental and he’s now eating (slowly) on his own again for the first time in a month! 🥹

His teeth became slanted and long due to the abscess, and his jaw is now really stiff. Hoping with time and tlc it will heal. His partner is so happy he has been popcorning and wheeking non-stop, he knows Frankie is getting better! 😃

Thanks so much for the help, really appreciated. 🥰

Photo dump!

What a wonderful update and a tribute to your care.

I am late to this thread, but I wanted to wish you all the strength right now.
Caring for a very ill piggy is physically and mentally draining, and not a lot of people understand.
It sounds like all of your hard work and dedication is paying off.

Just read this whole thread! Wow! You deserve 🥇🏆and I'm so glad he's doing better!

I went through something like this with a piggie and massive abscess/lost tooth but maybe about 1/5 the amount of time...you must be so relieved things are turning around

Yay. That’s brilliant. I’ve been thinking about you. Well done. All your hard work is paying off 😃

Thank you for your kindess and help. I'm so happy I thought he was never going to get better, it's amazing to see him eating hay again after all this time! :woot:

I've just read this whole thread through and I'm so relieved Frankie is eating again after everything you've both been through. I'm going through a similar experience with my piggy and this gives me hope. Hope you've been able to relax more now he's on the mend.

Thank you! 🥰 I hope everything goes well for you too, I had almost lost hope a few times, he flopped on his side at one point, lost 150 grams in weight and I thought it was over, but we just kept going and now he’s almost back to himself. One minute they are at death’s door and the next running around wondering what all the fuss was about!

Some more photos of his progress today (relaxing on a blanket catching some sunrays) plus a couple of my other piggy Pinkie, because I’m a very proud piggy parent and don’t need much excuse to show them off! 😆
