I'd be careful with marigolds, some varietys are toxic to cats and I think dogs too so if you have either, nor have local cats frequent your garden I wouldn't plant them.
This is a good point. Once you start looking into plants and you think, yay thats safe for my piggy, you will find its not safe for cats, and so on. I think the only one you are safe with is dandilions for all animals.
Thanks everyone. I did feed Kitty a phlox flower and she was fine. It was just a tiny flower lol not the whole head. I just ask because they make hay now with marigolds in it and I read on the UK link that marigolds were okay. Guess I'll just have to get the plain ones.
It is the English marigold or calendula that I understand is ok for piggies. But like mushrooms, best to leave well alone, unless you know what your looking for!
You can buy hay with added marigold. That is the way I would feed it.
It is calendula that's safe - that's what's included in the hay mixes you can buy.
There are lots of safe flowers so long as you do your research and feed in moderation they'll be fine. Whilst i agree with the idea of 'if in doubt leave it out' I think it's possible to be too cautious and end up losing out on a lot of potential foods.
