Lymphoma

We received the Prednisolone tablets in the post today. Ellie prescribed Vegas 1.5mg tablets to be taken 2x daily. She said we can just put the tablets in Vegas' mouth and she will chew it as normal. Hubby did that and Vegas didn't protest much and chew it normal. Given her water in syringe as well to help her push it down.

Carol hasn't had any side effects from the steroids and she quite likes the taste thankfully. The chemo caused hair loss on the injection sites which has regrown.

The lumps are starting to affect her mobility so we will have to start considering a plan to help her keep active.

Thank you for your reply.

Vegas started having her steroids treatment on Tuesday. She is taking 1.5mg tablets 2x a day. So far, we haven't seen any changes with her at all. She still eat loads and keeps up with Bryce and Whitney. She's a bit nippy with Whitney, but still as normal because Whitney is a bit of a menace being still a baby. She is maintaining her weight between 1330g-1350g, depending on whether they get grass for the day or not.

Carol is on the oral solution which is 10mg/ml. She gets weepy eyes from the lymphoma in her neck affecting the pink bits of her lower eyelid area. Vegas is a very gorgeous piglet and I hope the steroids continue to work for her :luv:

Just a bit of update on Vegas..

It's been 2 weeks since we found out she has cancer, and almost 2 weeks since we started her with steroids (7th Feb). Overall she is doing fine. She is maintaining her weight at around 1340-1350g, she is still going up and down the ramp, still interacting with Bryce and Whitney (she avoids them though whenever the 2 are bickering and chasing each other), she still eats loads of hay, grass, pellets, pea flakes, oats and veggies (she goes to every bowl of food available), she drinks a lot of water (she goes by our foot and asks us to give her water via syringe).

The only bit of difference I notice is she sleeps a few hours during the day (although hubby says it's normal for her, well since last Sept). She also has a bit of soft poops since we started with steroids. It's still formed poops but softer than it should be, sometimes they all end up in clumps. And I noticed a few days ago that there were tiny traces of blood (red dots of blood) in some areas where she was sleeping or staying. It's not much but it's noticeable. We don't know if it's from her pee or when she poops, coz when we pick her up and she sits on our lap, there isn't really anything on the towel. It's not much and seem to be random times. We don't want to take her to the vet for that since she doesn't seem to be in pain anyway and we don't want her to be stressed. It's also not like when a piggy has UTI and peeing with blood constantly. Hubby has told me that we have to think that she is dying and as much as possible, we don't really want to add anything more for her to endure. And as long as she is happy, then we don't want to unsettle her.

We were so glad the other day when she started wheeking again when she saw hubby get the bag of grass. She hasn't wheeked much lately and we were surprised she did it! ❤️

Hubby will check her lumps in the neck on Tuesday if it has grown or not and if the steroids helped to slow it down a bit after 2 weeks of treatment.

Aw, I’m so pleased Vegas is doing so well, I hope you all have loads and loads of happy times and Vegas continues to be well and pain free

Bless her, it sounds like she's still enjoying life, long may that continue. You and your hubby give your guinea pigs such a wonderful life.

Aw glad to hear Vegas is wheeking again. My little chap liked his water from the syringe too - I thought maybe due to his lumpy lymph glands it was more comfortable for him or maybe he just liked the extra cuddles. Enjoy your cuddles with Vegas 💕

I’m glad to hear she’s got her wheek back and that she’s fairing okay. Hopefully this can continue a while longer so you can have lots of happy todays to add to the memory bank 💜

Thank you all for your replies. ❤️

Well today, Vegas gained quite a few grams. She usually is around 1330g-1350g. Well today, Friday morning, hubby weighed her and she weighed around 1370g. I weighed her at night before giving her the steroids at 10:30pm and she is weighing at 1412g! We started weighing her morning and night since we started steroids so we know what we are dealing when it comes to her weight. Today was the first time she gained that much. We know that steroids can cause increased appetite and weight gain. So hubby will stop giving her grass for the time being coz she tends to eat loads of it. She does seem to eat more than the usual because she goes on every food bowl available to eat and then will ask for syringed water loads of times during the day. She is pooping (albeit soft poops) and weeing, and is perky and not in pain from what we can see. Hubby gave her a bit of emeprid just in case there's bloat but she is perky and isn't showing any bloat symptoms.

@Countrylass just want to ask..has Carol gained weight when she started with steroids? Vegas' normal weight was around 1300-1330g before we found out she has lymphoma. When she started with the steroids, she seemed to maintain her weight around 1330-1350g. Then a few days ago, she started gaining more. Like around 20g each time. This morning, hubby weighed her and she weighs 1410g. We know that steroids can increase appetite and makes you gain weight. Just wondering if other piggies who had steroids treatment has the same thing happening.

Vegas seem to eat more and asks for water a lot. We try to limit it coz we don't want her to gain so much weight. She still acts normal but she can be quiet sometimes. We don't know how much her lumps in the neck have grown, though it has grown with hubby just estimating around 25% since Ellie has seen her the first time 3 weeks ago.

Yes and similarly when my dog was recently on steroids he also gained weight, was hungry all the time, drank more and lost some control of his bladder and peed more and in the house occasionally.

Glad Vegas is doing well otherwise and is pain feee.

When I was on a high dose of steroids I was constantly hungry, I gained about 1/2 stone which the doctor said was actually very good as most people gain much more.
Vegas will be very hungry all the time I suspect, it seems to speed your metabolism up too and makes you hyperglycaemic

Before Nicky was diagnosed with lymphoma, he started to gain weight. At first, I was quite happy about it, because he was on the light weighted side for quite some time. But in his case it was the first symptom.

My vet said that Jellybaby might put on weight with the steroids due to increased appetite. He didn’t. Actually his weight very gradually dropped over time but as he had skin tumours as well as lymphoma I think this was inevitable.

Around an hour ago, we took Vegas to the local vet to be in her forever sleep. She has gone bad since last night. She didn't go down from their loft to have their tea. I don't think she ate much as well last night. She ate some this morning on her own but hubby fed her some CC and she ate a few grass and tomatoes. During the afternoon, she's gone worse. Refusing everything, even the water she always asked us frequently. We can see that she was shutting down during the day and not moving a lot. Her breathing also became shallow. We decided to not let her suffer. Bryce and Whitney managed to say their goodbyes to her as well.

Vet told us that she can feel she has loads of fluids in her body. Just like what our concern yesterday, we thought as well that she was full of fluids. She noticed right away her shallow breathing, confirming us that it was the right time to help her pass. We are just a bit glad that it only took her around 24hrs to really suffer and not much longer because she was completely fine and eating as normal and going around in the living room on Sunday. We know she was dying but nothing can really prepare you of the pain and heartbreak when it comes. It's 3 weeks since we first took her to Ellie for the lumps we felt in her neck.

We will burry her tomorrow beside Sierra in our piggies grave in the garden. She'll be with Sierra and Rocky again. I will post in the rainbow bridge soon. 😭😭💔💔💔
