Current prices at VetUK are £15.18 for 100ml, £21.36 for 180ml of Metacam for Dogs, or £19.69 for 100ml of Loxicom for Dogs, if your piggie has a preference. The cat version of Metacam is hugely more expensive, especially since it is one third of the strength, at £19.49 for 100ml!
Those prices could go up of course, like so much else ....
Wow that is so cheap, thank you! I am not sure how long she will need pain relief after gut stasis. I will definitely follow your link if it’s a long term thing!

I managed to get a prescription off my vet, she agreed to give me 6 months worth, but she’d only give me 15ml for online. So I’ve paid £13.50 online, plus £19.50 vets fee. They do a 30ml Metacam for cats at Vets UK, but I can’t see the bigger sizes you’re referring too. So it has still cost a lot for a tiny amount.
I’ve asked again if my vet would consider 30ml, as 15ml will only last 30 days on the increased dose of 0.5ml she’s finally agreed to. I just wondered how you select the larger sizes on the Vets UK website please? I attach the screenshot for your reference.
Many thanks

There is only 15ml or 30ml of cat available on VetUK.
The bigger bottles are for dog metacam version.

oh, I'm sorry, Piggies&Buns is right, I accidentally typed 100ml instead of 30ml . I'm very sorry that's messed you about and got your hopes up wrongly.

Dog metacam really is better value by far, it's a pity most vets won't prescribe it and that she wouldn't give you an online prescription for more than 15ml ofthe cat version.

That’s ok, no worries. She really loves the cat one, so I don’t mind paying over the odds for now. Absolutely dread the Emipred dosing twice a day as she hates that! Thank you for confirming.

Crumble/Brwsi and Chips had their check up at the vets and I managed to get a prescription though only for 1x 100ml metacam dog. Forgot to ask for loxicom but he seems to have adjusted to the Metacam now. With the fee and drugs we get 100ml for the price of a 32ml bottle so not too bad. The vet was saying they were bought out a couple of years ago and that there aren’t many independent vets left. Not looking like any economies of scale are being passed to their clients but there’s another layer of profit to fund. Trying to decipher the bill as we had bunny checks and vaccination too. Just realised that they missed the cats’ worming tablets off the bill and Chips’ check up - no wonder I thought it was cheap!

Is Loxicom better or cheaper? Thanks for replying and please excuse my ignorance.

We've had one or the other from my vet depending on what's in stock. They're used interchangeably and I can't recall any difference in price. Both at 1.5mg/ml. Piggies have been happy with either.

One of them (can't remember which now) sometimes has a bit of a strange whiff when you first open the bottle but it clears very quick. It might be some sort of preservative they use. Don't let it put you off. Also if you're switching from one to the other the pigs might be a bit cagey at first but again don't worry - they'll realise it's fine once they get a taste!

Upping Metacam from once to twice a day now as he was a bit quiet last night and wheezy this morning plus watery eyes. So straight to the vet and co-trimoxazole antibiotics 0.7ml morning and night. Was quiet after the vets and lost 55g since Sunday night so added a couple of sessions of critical care. Thankfully so far happy to take meds, feed, hay and veggies 🤞

Back to vets tomorrow as another 37g lost and quiet much of the day not moving about much. Brighter again this evening but less keen on the syringe feeding. Veggies hay nuggets and meds all being consumed though. 🤞

George is on Septrin (co-trimoxazole) and it is working but affecting his appetite - seriously at first. I mix some probiotic into the syringe food and I've been following the girls round for poop donations. He seems to be back on track as his appetite is improving after a couple of weeks juggling it. Hopefully your boy will pick up eating as the AB starts to take effect and he improves - but keep an eye on that appetite.

George has a stubborn UTI that is proving hard to shift. I notice your 0.7ml (am and pm) is more than our 0.2ml (same) but I wonder whether you know the concentration of the antibiotic? Mine is labelled 'adult suspension' which is (80mg/400mg per 5ml... it's a mix of two ABs) but I think there's a pediatric version that is half the strength. Do you know which you have? I was contemplating whether George might have his dose increased you see. We go back to our vet next week.

Trying to decipher the label but it says Paediatric. 100ml (per ml) x 10 . Vets on Friday less wheezy and eyes clearer plus he was livelier in the morning.. X ray shows gassy but may need a lateral x ray to be clear if anything untoward is going on beyond his arthritis. Prescribed Emeprid (no cisapride in stock) 0.55ml every 8 hours. Gained 24g yesterday 🙂

I think yours is the 'half' strength version which is why you've got a much bigger volume then. I feel a bit more reassured now! We usually get emeprid if we have a gut that needs a bit of encouragement. He's perhaps getting his Veg:Hay balance a bit out which can make them gassy. If his antibiotic is working he should be picking up his eating - little gains are always more encouraging than little losses. Well done fella!

Pleased to report that he’s finished his antibiotics and back to his usual self with him and Chips climbing the bars for treats! 😍🤩Just on the Metacam now but sticking to twice daily. Back over 1.2kg with no supplementary feeding . Will keep an eye on his guts etc . He’s 6 years old now so we have to take extra care of our lovely fluff.
