i've just been trimming chesneys nails and he moved as i went to trim one of them and he squeaked and the nail was bleeding. :0:0:0 i feel awful. :0

i have some flour so i put his nail into that and now he is sat with me until i know it's stopped bleeding. i checked the others just incase but they're fine.

what else can i do/need to do?

i do my buns nails and i've never caught the quick. i feel so awful. :0:0

it's happened to me a couple times and apart from the slight bleeding, it was just fine. I did however bathe the nails in liquid Savlon to avoid infection as it is an open wound.

Hope this helps. It'll grow back.

I did this a few months back and cried like a baby! I felt so awful! I just put a little savlon on it for few days after and she was fine. I think I was more upset than she was! :))

don't worry mine squeel every time I do it and I haven't even made them bleed! I'm sure he'll get over it in no time!

My vet said to push the nail into a bar of unscented soap, it will seal the wound.

i don't have any bars of soap. i pushed the nail into some flour, apparantly this does the same thing?

I have tried the flour method but found it brushed off. You can buy those wound powders or some kind of cotton bud with something on the end that you dab over the nail.

Not sure of the brand name though sorry.

he squeaked on one other nail so i thought i'd caught the quick then but i hadn't. the one i did catch bled for literally a minute, if that, and i sat him on my knee for a bit just to make sure he was ok.

he's back in the cage now and is still my friend so that's good. i've just them some veg to cheer them up. both have just had a mite treatment.

it's all going wrong at the minute!

they've been chasing and nipping each other too (see my other thread) and ches has just been humping maisie.

Treatment for the pig nothing, it won't get infected, it will stop bleeding (think about wild guinea pigs)
You need the treatment...a cup of tea??

:)) that would go down nicely! i'll get one now! a cup of tea always solves everything! :))

ches seems ok. he's munching veg and he still comes over to me for nose rubs. :)

so you don't think i need to get that liquid for his nail for a few days then?

I had one bleed alot, after stemming the blood with the soap method i just left her. It was fine.

he should be ok then as it didn't bleed very much at all. he certainly won't appreciate having them done next time now though!

Guinea pigs have a quite short bleeding time and a short clotting time. A little blood goes a long way. Leave well alone, no soap or Savlon. Remember the blood flow will wash anything away from the nail, creams etc would seal everything in..
Nature itself sometimes has the answers without our intervention.

ok, well i don't have bars of soap or savlon in anyway so i've had to leave it. he seems ok.

can't believe he moved as i went to cut. talk about bad timing!

think i will get some new clippers too as i struggled a bit with the ones i have. they were a bit too big really.

i have done my rabbits nails so many times and they have dark nails which is even more difficult and i've never cut the quick. ches has light nails and i can see the quick and i go and flamin cut it. i felt awful when he did a little squeak. aww, my baby.

There is one thing worse than cutting your pig's nails too short.
An anxious owner asked me to trim her pig's nails as she was afraid of cutting them too short and making them bleed.
I think you can guess the rest!

oh dear! :))

It took me three years to get the courage to trim my pigs nails myself. I was forced to go independent when the twins came along. I was terrified at first, I remember how bad it feels to catch a quick when you're still unsure about the whole thing, it totally knocks your confidence! I used to be the worlds biggest worrier (I'm not much better now!) but now, a few years later, I can do 10 sets of nails in 10 minutes. And only catch one quick. Not bad, 1 out of 140 nails. :))

It gets easier with practice. I am quite sure Chesney will forgive you! At least you have the experience of trimming your bunnies nails, that must help some.

Maybe if your nail clippers were too big for the job, that wouldn't have helped. My clippers are tiny. Just like CCC4 my piggy numbers mean I have to do them myself, although the nurse at my vets did some for me the first time and didn't charge because they were rescues. She was happy to show me what to do, especially with black nails. You could try asking your nurse to show you if you feel your confidence has been knocked a bit. I always think it must feel like when we cut our nails too short, or break it too far down - it wrecks! But I don't know if that is really the case or not. Piggies can squeak sometimes just cos they don't like what we're doing, not necessarily because it is painful? xxxxx

Am I the only scaredy cat who gets someone else to do piggies nails then? :red Years ago I trimmed a dogs nails and made him bleed and have never got over that fear so my piggies go to the local pet care cottage round the corner :)) (Cookie and Muffin are booked in for Saturday actually)

The worst you can do is cut the nail too short so that it bleeds. No more, no less.
The more you practise trimming the nails yourself the less apprehensive you will become.
What exactly bothers you? A squealing pig and/or the sight of blood?
If my pigs play up I either ignore the shouts or else tell them to not be so silly, if I cut a nail too short and it bleeds I am more concerned about bood on my clothing than the pig!!

Oh I don't know though Al, Jasper is my big Coronet Boar (almost 3lb) and he is so good having his nails done. Peter cut one a little too short at the weekend. You could see blood up the nail but nothing came out! We were lucky.

I do have a couple with twisted nails that go under so try and keep them as short as possible.

Its both really, my piggies wriggle so much when you try going near their nails and I just dont want to hurt them so find it easier getting the girl round the corner to do it ;) I have a fear of being bitten :red

For me it's neither, it's the thought of hurting them. But numbers dictate that I have to do them myself, with all my own and the fosters too, it would cost an arm and a leg (although I have never cut them 'that' short rolleyes )

i think i would have been ok if he hadn't moved as i went to clip! i managed to do all the other nails fine. although, i am going to buy some smaller clippers for next time.

i'm confident when it comes to looking after my rabbits but the pigs are new to me so i tend to worry more. i was like this when i first got the rabbits though!

ches had his nails trimmed at the vets the first time so she showed me what to do and i was confident doing it....should have worried and then it probably would have been fine! rolleyes

i still feel awful about it today...but ches is fine and has forgiven me. :)

An alternative way of dealing with a wriggling and noisy guinea pig is to warn it that if it doesn't keep still it might have a toe amputated, instead of having a nail trim. They see reason then!

I agree, I hate the thought of hurting them. With my own pigs (26) I do all my own nails and I'm quite good at it now. But I caught Daphne's quick a few weeks back and I felt absolutely awful!

"I do all my own nails and I'm quite good at it now."
I assume you do mean the pig's nails!!
