Jin Qian Cao‏ & Bladder Stones

My 2 year old guinea pig was diagnosed with bladder stones about a month ago and I was told by the vet that there wasnt really anything that could be done for him and to bring him back in a week as he'd probably have to be put down.

He had lost alot of weight, although still eating ok and was in pain every time he passed urine.

I came home and did some research and found that people had tried chinese remedies so I though I'd give it a go.

I bought Jin qian Cao (Gold Coin Grass) Granules

I mixed 3gms of the granules to 100ml of warm water. Then gave 2ml everyday by syringe and also put about 5ml into his drinking water.

I bought it from www.chineseHerb.co.uk and it was £9.50 plus postage (about £2 I think).

well it's worked a treat. Darwin is now back to his usual chubby self and is no longer in pain - its a miracle!

It's supposed to help prevent bladder stones forming so I will continue to give it to him and keep putting it in the water so my other piggy gets some too.

I thought i'd share this in the hope that it may help other piggies out there who are suffering with bladder stones.
 
I am glad that your boy has made it thanks to those herbs, but I would strongly suggest that you look for another vet!

You can successfully operate on on most bladder stones (has your boy had an x-ray - preferably without general anaesthetics - to confirm the stone?) and I sincerely hope that your vet has at least given you some pain killer as your boy in such severe pain before he sent you away!

Did he have the stones removed before starting the Chinese remedy or has he still got them?
 
Thanks for sharing, I hope he continues to do well but I echo the others' thoughts on the lack of treatment your boy was offered for his stones. If the stones are still present and the vet won't remove them, I recommend requesting frequent x-rays to keep close tabs on the size and location of the stone. If the stone works it's way into the urethra it can block the passage and quickly become a life-threatening situation, so if the stones aren't removed I would strongly advise close monitoring of the situation.

How is Darwin doing now, is he still ok? I was encouraged by your message and bought the same product for my piggie who had a bladder stone op a couple of weeks ago. Unfortunately the op has not cured his symptoms. He still has stones in his ureter which are causing him pain, he has blood in his urine and is straining a lot when he goes.

I've just made up a batch of the herb mixture but it looks quite strong and smells quite potent - abit like gravy granules. Is this how yours was?

I get the feeling Billy is going to hate me for this!
 
Still doing well :)

Darwin is still doing well. I've stopped giving him the chinese herbs but am keeping a close eye on him.

I've also cut right back on apples, cucumber and carrots - something he was having lots of! Its mainly greens and grass for him from now on.

My friends piggy has just been diagnosed with the same thing so have passed the herbs onto her - fingers crossed.
