Is this bumblefoot?

Yesterday I fed Hippo multiple times throughout the day with quite a bit of critical care. I fed him until he stopped eating, which was usually almost all of the product I made. I was pleased! This morning I weigh him again. 750 grams!! I’ve no clue why he is dropping so much weight and so quickly. Hippo is definitely sleeping more than usual but when I come in the room he wheeks, runs around the cage, and lifts his paws on the cage bars begging for treats. His feet are looking decent and the scabs seem to be shrinking. Unfortunately I was unable to get an appointment at the vet yesterday, and they are all closed for the weekend. There are no vets within an hour and we are getting a snow storm starting in a few hours so I am unable to drive anywhere further. He definitely seems on his way out (with the weight loss and laziness I’m noticing), but hopefully I am able to get him to the vet Monday if the highway is clear and safe to drive on.
I have attached an imagine just to display how thin he is, this was a few moments ago while I was feeding him separately. Looking at him makes me want to cry, he is so little. (Please ignore the junk on my desk! I work from home so I eat most of my food here )

Also he is drinking A LOT! I work in the room beside them and the drinking of the bottle is constant. I’m positive it is him because every time I check on them it’s Hippo at the bottle and not Mike.

do you know how much (in terms of mls) of critical care you are getting into him?

@Piggies&buns That I am not too sure about honestly. I make an amount in a small plate and he eats out of there. I typically do 1tbsp of critical care + 2tablespoons of water per feeding. According to the bag that equals 9 grams. This morning I tried feeding him and he wasn’t really interested, he took a few bites but nothing more. Should I be forcing him to eat it? I do have a syringe but it’s not thick enough for me to feed him with, I can go to the pharmacy today and get one if required!

I don’t know how much 9g worth is going to be in mls. It’s much easier to monitor intake if you actually syringe feed with a 1ml syringe. You’re aiming for at least 40mls and up to 90mls in a 24 hour period to stop weight loss. It’s great he is eating it for himself off a plate, but if he was eating enough then he shouldn’t be losing weight

Today's instructional video on our Facebook page - Syringe feeding

my knowledge of skinnies is limited to knowing that they eat more, poop more and need to be kept warm - so I’m thinking that you would need to syringe feed even more than the amounts I mention to prevent weight loss? @PigglePuggle keeps skinnies so perhaps could help?

Thanks for the numbers to be aiming for! I will use a syringe from now on and make sure he gets those amounts.

Just wondering if he is warm enough? Does he have a snugglesafe heat pad he can use if he wants and multiple fleecy beds? He does look very thin poor little chap, my skinny pig (who is also a chocolate hippo) has always drunk loads more water and pees way more than the furry piggies- in winter I have to change her fleecy beds daily, sometimes twice a day, to keep her warm enough and keep her feet dry... I imagine a poorly and skinny, skinny pig might need even more heat sources and fleecy bedding changes than that... if his weight is that low I think you should perhaps be giving the syringe feed every couple of hours? As much as he will take, and ideally holding him in a warm blanket or just with his face popping out of a fleecy tunnel? Hooman winter hands are very cold up to naked hippo skin! I hope he will be ok x

I am just posting to update everybody that unfortunately Hippo has passed away a few hours ago. I went to check on him around 5pm and he was laying on his stomach gasping for air. We scooped him up and drove him to the vet to put him out of his pain. Unfortunately the only open vet was an hour away and he was gasping for air and convulsing the entire drive. The vet said his chest was filled with water and he was experiencing heart failure.

When we got back from the vet I showed Hippo’s body to his cage mate, Mike, who seemed quite scared and refused to come out and sniff/observe him. Rest In Peace Hippo 😢
