Is this an eye infection or just sleepy dust?

My guinea pig’s eye seems to be oozing pus!
I’m taking him to the vet when it’s open but just wanted to know if it is an eye infection or just sleepy dust

He’s still eating and drinking as normal.

do you notice that it is just after he has washed/groomed himself? Or is it all of the time?

Hi!

Watery fluid (dried or drained) is a sign of an irritation in the eye. If it is a one-off; then the irritatant has likely been washed out.
If it is ongoing or there is repeated squinting, then please see a vet for either something stuck under the lid or a cut to the eye surface that is invisible to the naked eye. I could also be a sign of a beginning conjunctivitis, but that is for the vet to decide.

The regular eye cleaning fluid is a milky white. Occasionally you can see white flecks hanging around the eye that have not drained properly through the tear duct.

Any thick green/yellowish crust are a sign of a well developed respiratory infection (URI) and need to be seen by a vet promply as that is a potentially fatal bacterial disease.

It’s just after he’s cleaned himself this is the first I’ve seen it

Okay it’s only white fluid and he doesn’t squint he’s still keeping eye open as normal but I will see if it continues. Thank you this has helped 😊

When the piggies groom themselves they produce a milky fluid that cleans their eyes. I’d had piggies for years before I first saw it in one who groomed herself on my lap. If it’s only at times of self grooming and cleans and dries away then it’s nothing to worry about. If it is more frequent than that then best to get the vet to check it out.

Thank you, it went away so I’m going to keep an eye out😉 but I think it’s the grooming

UPDATE: it was a piece of hay stuck in his eye but it’s all cleared now 😊

If he had hay under his lid I would get a vet to check the eye as he will probably have an ulcer that you cannot see (needs the vet to use fluorescent dye and then a UV lamp to show it up).

I agree with @VickiA .
Jemimah had hay poke last year and although I spotted it very quickly she already had a scratch on her eye.
We had eye drops for a week and it was fine.
