When Ellie was about 6 she broke her leg and when we went shopping I hired a wheelchair to go around the shopping centre. It amazed me how differently people reacted to her while she was in the chair. Some spoke to her in a loud voice as though not being able to walk made her deaf!. Others didn't even talk to her at all and directed every question through me as though she was incapable of understanding!

Maybe if parents took more time to explain things to children when they ask questions, rather than tell them off for asking, then they would grown into adults who would be more understanding and not just stare or treat people in wheelchairs as though they are from another planet.

After all its the person we are inside that matters - not the outward appearance. :)

Yep you do speak for everyone here :)

I've never really spoke to/known anyone who uses a wheelchair but I don't stare at people just because they can't walk/don't walk. When my nannan broke her leg either last year or the year before (can't remember :-/ oops) she had a wheelchair for a while (she only used it out of the house, managed to get around inside) and I went shopping with her and stuff, and everyone stared at her as if well..I dunno, but they gave us really weird looks...we came up with a plan just to stare back at them XD

LOL works sometimes Jane! ;)

Bit of bad news - it's over £5,000, and Ataxia groupd will grant me £1,000 only towards the cost - when I say 'only' forgive me for being selfish.

Independence comes at a horrid price :( :(

Still on the charity railroad! ;)

That is a lot of money. I am not particularly shocked though. My uncle is a wheelchair user following a very nasty motorbike accident (hit & run >:() over 30 years ago. I have never known him any different as I am 26 and consequently I am one of those people who is almost oblivious to disabilities as to me it is 'normal' to have someone with wheels ;D

I know my uncle struggles sometimes having to pay so much for special cushions in order to reduce the sores he gets as well as the cost of the chairs themselves. My uncles disability means his independance is practically zero as he has very reduced use of his arms as well but he has a specially adapted car which anyone over 25 can drive so we take him out all the time. I remember as a child arguing with my brother and cousins over who got to 'ride' with Uncle Stephen! ;D

I hope you get the chair soon - if I win the lottery next week, I'll buy it for you!

Awww that sucks :( Hope you manage to get the money. Your not being selfish at all, over £4,000 is a lot to have to save up! We didn't win the lottery either to buy it for you..lets try again on wednesday XD

awww, I can highly vouch for the cost of things that are needed! :(

I had a couple of 'free' chairs when I was younger, but the minute you turn 18 that's it - all of the 'easy', free help is out of the window.

We had our adapted car in September and wouldn't be anywhere without it now . Such an immense sense ofindependence for us both!
Now it just comes the time where I am no longer comfortable. Seeing as I have to rely on my chair, the comfort is important, also enabling me to get around at the same time.

Just kinda stuck at the moment :-\ :-\

All lottery wins greatly received! ;) ;) ;)

Things gone bd now. OT (occupational therapist) has let me down by not giving me a supporting statement, though she has now decided she doesn't know enough about wheelchairs! >:( >:( >:(

Anyway, have let her know that I want an OT who CAN help me.. but referrals can take up to 6 months :'(

Not good with sciatica (although not too bad today), so 6 months is a hell of a long wait to be in pain.

Mike thinks if we talk to the bank in lending us the money for a chair to be sooner rather than later? :-\ :-\

So in need of luck!

Good luck Kelly ;) You shouldn't have to wait 6 months, that sucks! Know any lottery winners? Ooh..it's the lottery tonight? ;)

Hopefully you'll get something sorted :-* :smitten:

Hope you get something sorted soon Kelly. It is terrible if you have to wait 6 months.

I don't understand my sister in law is an OT and she knows just how important a wheelchair is to anyone who is dependant on one :o :o
Honestly it makes my blood boil sometimes :tickedoff: :tickedoff: :tickedoff: :tickedoff:
OK can you try from another angle? I don't know maybe the hospital, local member of parliament hey i'd do anything if i was you cause you deserve better treatment. (oh gosh i better get done from my soap box or someone might get cross with me, sorry :-*)
Good luck sweetie from us both :smitten: :smitten: :smitten: :smitten:

Aww thanks! I have asked her for a referral to the wheelchair OTs ::) ::) Gonna be way too late by the time they get in touch!

Hospitals are just as bad - you need a referral from an OT or doctor first!? ?

Anyhow, trying ways out at the mo. See, independence comes at a price!
