As it's a lovely spring evening I was just putting my 2 guinea pigs out for 10 mins on the grass and as I was putting out the 2nd pig, Sammy she somehow got caught in my dress and I just could not get it out. It was half ripped off and I had to trim it off with my nail scissors as I was home alone.

She seems fine but it is bleeding an hour later albeit just slowly. How can I help her? The vet said to try a cold compress which I did and now decided to leave her 20 mins or so then check her again.

Feel awful now : ( any advice much appreciated x

Use a bar of soap, or bicarbonate (spelling?) of soda to stop the bleeding.

if its bleeding out of controll corn flower is good... if you havent got anything like that nip her up to the vets and they will use silver nitrate... i swear by that stuff... it comes in a little pen and you just dab it on... stops the bleeding straight away...!... always worth having something like blood stop in...
hope shes okay now...
x

Thanks everyone : ) it stopped after about an hour. She seems happy enough but I feel awful : ( still don't know how it happened. Just one of those things I guess. At least she got some extra cuddles tonight x

I have a styptic pencil - if thats how its spelled?! The vet used it on Caramel last time she had her nails done there as she squirmed just when the vet clipped. I got my one from Amazon, I think... might have been Zooplus. Was a good thing too, Jellybean did that more recently when I was clipping all their nails and it worked a treat. Might be worth keeping one in your piggy first-aid kit :)

This is not your fault. Accidents happen and your little one is fine. Please do not be so hard on yourself.

Things happen (it has happened to one of mine, who had a weak nail that tended to break); it just comes as a shock to you!

Your piggy will be absolutely fine as soon as the pain has subsided. You may notice that the nail will grow back thicker.

Poor piggie! It will grow back, and she will be okay. Linney once ripped her nail off after catching it in the door to her cage... it bled like crazy which totally freaked me out, but it was fine, and it did grow back!

Thanks everyone : ) Sammy seems fine today and is still a chilled out pig x
