…. Does anyone drive a self-charging hybrid? My car dealer called me with a really good deal, but I’d like to have some idea if it would save that much petrol.

Anyone got one? Thoughts/experience/tuppenceworths - all appreciated!

My Sister has one and absolutely loves it, says it's the best thing she's ever bought. She says she saves a fortune on petrol, other than it's small and red I can't tell you any more about it though, I'm useless when it comes to cars!

Ooh thanks for that! One vote yes then 👍

My dad and sister have a self charging hybrid. They charge themselves every time they are at a stop. If you have long distance driving, they are still good, but not as great as city driving from what I hear.

Thanks - I’d be mostly city/village type. Do you know if they notice much saving in petrol?

Local taxi companies here will frequently lease out cars to drivers who may not own a car suitable for taxiing themselves, and/or find cars available for purchase with specific repayment plans. Very rarely are these cars anything other than a Toyota Yaris, or some other form of Toyota hybrid.

Edit - The Yaris is a 4-door, right? I don't drive, my car knowledge is a tad limited lol.

We have one and we like it. It takes care of the charging itself and you don't have to worry about range, which is my main worry about purely electric cars. We have noticed a difference in the petrol it uses - we recently had to take both cars to see family a couple of hours away, and the big hybrid used less fuel than my tiny petrol car. Not sure how they compare directly on pootling around town but the hybrid completed those duties perfectly before we got the second car. We'll be looking for a hybrid again, every bit of fuel saved at the moment is much appreciated!

I took one out on a test drive and took a couple of my regular routes. There was a display that showed when you were in electric mode or petrol mode. I found I was only really in petrol mode which meant that because of the weight of the battery I felt it would actually be more expensive for me to run. A bit of reading around suggested that they aren’t right for everyone because of this. I’m hoping to be able to afford a full electric at some point but prices need to come down.

We have a Toyota Prius hybrid. It is really fuel efficient we can get 80 miles to a gallon on the motorway but i would say that it averages around 70 mpg. A little bit less in the winter as the batteries are affected by the cold weather. We have been test driving a couple of fully electric cars (my OH has to choose a new company car and it has to be electric). They are really lovely to drive but sooo expensive and on 12 months delivery at the moment.

It is yes! A small one. Your lack of knowledge is surprisingly helpful Lorcan! 🤣🤣. There must be something of money saving merit to them!

Helpful thanks!

Aye - really you are relying on being in electric a lot. I’m looking at the new hybrid juke. ( I have a petrol one at the min ) This new juke cuts to petrol after 34 mph and goes for about 3 miles in electric. Just not convinced…

When I look at the Toyotas - I think they must do hybrid really well. I’d be changing to a Juke and I’m not sure they are as good as the Toyotas.

My sister gets 55 mpg and my dad gets about 45 mpg; both of their cars are older than 5 years so things may have improved by now. There are websites like autotrader that can give you estimated mpg for their vehicles.

We only own classics, and petrol cars. Plus our business vans are diesel (thankfully the clean air zones remain scrapped for now). Though many of our friends have hybrids. In comparison to electric, hybrids are far better. Definitely the way forward.
You are making the right decision with hybrid 👍🏻

It was a Yaris and a Jazz I took out. I think it worked out just under 60mpg on my commute. I have a petrol Micra now and average 55mpg. For the difference in price of investment there wasn’t enough difference for me although the price of fuel has increased considerably since then 😳

We are looking at going fully electric over the next 5 years. Going to be a sad day when that happens, nothing beats the feeling of a throbbing 2 ton 4x4 in full flight as it roars off the hard shoulder. 😁

How u gonna catch speeders in an electric car!? You be like that Benny Hill milk float character! 🤣🤣

Have you seen how fast some electric cars are? This one has a range of 280 miles on a full charge at our patrol speeds, 0-60mph in 3.5 seconds, with a top speed of 120mph, it can carry all our kit and can tow 11 tonnes whereas our current diesel cars can only tow 3.5 tonnes. 👍

Then you have this that the police are trialling, 0-60 mph in 3 seconds, top speed of 160 mph and a range of 380 miles on a full charge.

That’s no milk float! And it would be silent! Speed and stealth - dangerous! Would it be automatic?

All electric vehicles are automatic, I've scared the hell out of unsuspecting pedestrians on supermarket car parks when I glide up behind them and they turn round and I'm there in a 2 ton Volvo! 🤣🤣🤣

Electric = instant power. No waiting for internal combustion. We have race/track cars and there’s no way I would embarrass myself going up against the Tesla that pulls up next to me at the lights!

Well I’m definitely interested! The sales guy will have to do me a better deal tho. They won’t have a demo car in until August, so I will give it a test drive and take it from there. My Juke is 1.0 but some kind of turbo. The new Hybrid is 1.6 no turbo and self charging. I just wish I knew how much petrol it would actually save me.

If I hit the jackpot on the lottery, I fancy the new Honda Civic hybrid, I love my little Civic and will run it into the ground before I'll replace it.
