How Pregnant Is My Sow?

She probably conceived around Sept 20th. She's a very very small pig, so it's hard to tell how far along she is or how many pups in the litter. She was a rescue. Judging by these photos, can anyone give any advice? I'm hoping she's due in the next week or two because the poor creature can barely stand. And don't start in on me like nutters for "animal abuse" because I carefully held her on her back for 30 seconds to take a photo. Thank you for being reasonable adults.

I'm not sure anyone can tell you from a photo. But if your dates are correct then she should have the babies in the next 2 and a bit weeks.

Thanks! I've had pigs on and off for about 10 years and have always been leery to join any forums because of how batshit crazy so many women in the GP community can get. I appreciate your common sense response. I'm thinking she's maybe a week away from birth because of different her vagina looks compared to my 3 year old sow who's never been bred. This is this pigs first litter, and she's changed so much since I got her at 4 months.

Hi and welcome

I am very sorry but you cannot predict a pregnancy from a picture of the belly - since guinea pigs are so close to the ground, they do not have the kind of forward sticking baby belly that upright humans have; the babies are mostly carried on the sides to ensure that a sow can still walk and escape danger. The babies are sitting in the area above the nipples on the side of the belly that is cut off by your picture anyway, not that I could predict anything, anyway.
Or make any reliable predictions from any picture from any angle at that without being able to gently feel and handle her.
All I can tell you is that from your description is that your sow is most likely somewhere in the latest stages with her pregnancy (i.e. within the last one or two weeks) and that she sounds like she is a repeat mum with a larger litter.

Please make sure that you adjust the diet to support your sow during her pregnancy and while she is nursing her pups. Diet is the one area where you can really influence the odds in your favour, especially over several weeks. Be aware that the larger the litter the greater the risk of one or two large babies and some very small ones as nutrients are not necessarily shared evenly between the pups. In repeat pregnancies and larger litters there is also an increased risk of dead-born or not viable pups (i.e pups that will not survive for long). It is vital that you do NOT OVERFEED at this stage unless your sow is very neglected and malnourished. She can eat as much as she needs to (still on the normal hay based pregnancy diet) once the babies are safely out.

Seeing all your pictures now and not just the one of her genitals, I would say that your sow is in the later stages of a pregnancy, but she is not overly large and doesn't look like she is on course for an overly large litter.

Like with natural human births, babies come when they come. Please follow our diet advice to prevent too large pups getting stuck at birth and to help protect your mommy's bodily reserves. The whole pelvic bones separation thingie is not very exact; all it tells you that your sows is generally somewhere within 2 weeks of giving birth.
Keep your mom as normal, but as stress-free as possible and try not over-handle her unless necessary. As long as she is eating and OK in herself you need not worry.
