Dilly's Piggies
Teenage Guinea Pig
I purchased some chewable 500mg vitamin C tablets, anyone know how much water I should dissolve these with?
Guinea Pig... lolHuman or pig?

One of my sows is suffering with bacterial cystitis and is not eating her veg. I have to keep her on a low calcium diet which means I cannot feed her many dark leafy greens that are higher in vitamin C as she is susceptible to bladder stones, and she absolutely hates bell pepper, the only veg she will eat are lettuce and cucumber, she is not getting enough vitamin C so my vet has said to give her supplements. I'm waiting for the Oxbow vitamin C hay tablets to be delivered so I had to buy human tablets, whereas the only tablet I could find is a 500mg or a 1000mg, and I have no idea how to dose this. I know what I'm doing with my piggies I just needed the ratios. Thank you.Apparently 10mg - 30mg is the recommended dose for a pig so a tablet would be at least 17 doses (if you were giving 30mg a day).
Is there a reason why you want to give extra Vitamin C? It's recommended to only give it when a piggy is ill as excess Vitamin C can cause health issues.
Typical isn't it, the one thing that's good for her and she won't eat it.
My bladder sludge pig refuses to drink water so I have to get it into him in ither ways.
I'd probably go for dissolving it in 20ml, then giving 1ml a day. That'd be less than the 30mg dose but more than the minimum.
I would probably throw it away after a couple of days and start with fresh. I've never used it but I would imagine that the mixture would go off/weird after a few days.
Perfect, thank you! This is what my Kiwi was prescribed by the vet - 1000mg in 25ml of water. This provides 40mg in 1ml. Give 1ml daily.
I'll be sure to get some more romaine for her, she does love her lettuce, I feed mostly curly and little gem though as romaine is harder to find in my area, I need to go into town for that. Any other recommendations which she may like to try? I just wish she would eat her peppers, all my other 7 piggies love peppers and she's typically the only one that hates it, and she's the only one that's sick and needs it. She was a rescue piggy and I didn't get her until she was 8 months old, I've had my others since birth or 8 weeks so maybe that's why, she just wasn't offered peppers when she was young, she has always been picky since I got her. Also, Romaine lettuce is nutrient dense, so that would be a good choice if using something else at the moment.
I bought a pack of 25 tablets so I'm just mixing one up giving her a small amount and then throwing the left overs away right after, I know that vitamin C loses it's potency extremely fast when added to water so it's useless keeping it, I just mix a new one up every day. I've been mixing in about 50ml of water and giving her 0.5ml of the 1cc/ml syringe, judging by what you've said though this is probably not enough? She has perked up a lot though so hopefully it's doing some good at least! I'm terribly bad at maths, got an E for it haha! But obviously getting dosages right is very important when it comes to medication so I needed to come here and ask. I just can't wait for those Oxbow tablets, it has it all figured out for me...![]()
