Hi all. Just wondering how long (in your experience) metaclopromide takes to work in getting the gut moving in GPs?

Clive had it at vets at 7 then again 3am had done 17 poops by morning which vet was please with. Had one more dose after that.

It will vary from one patient to another and what route your piggy has had this medication by? Injection? Orally?

Orally will start working in around 20-40min i would say, but this could be longer if the guts have slowed right down. If injected under the skin i would say 15-20mins. But this is all going to vary and the drug needs to work throughout the digestive system and this does not mean you will see poops in 20mins either.

x.

Thanks Abi,

My boy got it via injection around 10.30 this morning to treat his bloat. I was concerned earlier as he was just lethargic still and sleeping in his den, not much poop, not eating. Suddenly he seems to have woken up and wanted out of his cage so I let him out thinking that walking around may let out some gas. He still looks bloated but, some sludgy poop has come out and he seems far happier and now eating like its Christmas. I'm hoping this is the turn for the best :-)

It is also dependent upon the food intake and the fact that "what goes" in takes 24 hours to "come out the other end".

If your piggie has had little food over the previous 72hours then unless you start syringe feeding sufficent quantity it can take up to 48 hours for decent poos to resume.

Also one dose may not be enough and metoclopromide may need to be supplemented with another drug owing to its selective action in working on the foregut only.

I have piggies with underlying gut issues that are prone to bloat/constipation/squishy poos and when they have "an episode" my vet prescribes cis-apride and zan-tac twice daily for up to 7 days. Cis-apride is preferred by my vet over metoclopromide - but the oral suspension has only recently become available again over here and is difficult to get hold of. Zan-tac works on the hind gut and I would suggest you talk to your vet about giving your piggie this (dose range 2-10mg/kg) in addition to a course of metoclopromide.

Most importantly however is to keep the food going in at 120ml per 24hours in 20-30ml per sittings.

Sorry I was typing this on a phone last night and it took forever - I forgot he had another dose around 11pm, also as others say he was being syringe fed and eating very small amounts of veggies. It took a couple of days for his poops to increase and about a week for him to get back to normal (if you search 'ill guinea pig first experience to share' you can read the thread) Hope your piggle is OK x

Thank you for your responses :-)

Haven't seen poops this morning but he's eating very well. Still bloated.

I'm going to talk to the vet this morning as I think he does need to be stimulated more. It's obviously started to help as I got some poop from him last night and he's so much perkier.
