I've read that it is believed that guinea pigs can only see for 1 metre. I'd believe they have bad eyesight, but sometimes I can swear they are looking right at me, from a distance. They'll stop when they see me and keep looking at me like they want food probably :)

Maybe they are just thinking, "what's that moving?" or can see a blurry shape. But I'd swear they know it's me and are waiting for me to come feed them :)

What do you guys think? Has anyone tested this theory?

And also, if I'm in the consevatory, and the pigs are on the grass (about 3 metres away) and I move suddenly then they get spooked and hide under their house. Maybe they just see blurry shapes further than 1 metre?

They seem to be very good at sensing things- they have very good hearing, and whiskers are used to detect vibrations/smells in the air unless i'm wrong?
however their eyesight seems to be pretty poor. i'm sure if they could see better we wouldn't spook them from far away; my pigs will often stand still and "hide" when i walk towards them but it's only when i'm near the cage and they sniff at me they relax :)

They may not be able to see very far, but they can hear a fridge door open three rooms away.

As far as I know piggies have poor eyesight and rely on their hearing. Piggies eyes are positioned so that they can also see any airborne predators that may be ready to fly down. I'm sure my mimsi is losing his sight, he is older anyway so maybe exptected..
