Hi everyone, sorry for this unpleasant post but I've just come home to a disturbing smell from my two boys cage. I only cleaned them yesterday and they get cleaned twice a week so this is out of the norm for us. I'm worried that it's my older pig...

Basically the bed smells of strong 'fish'... Can anyone give me a bit of advice as to what it could be? I haven't long introduced my two boys. Maybe a month or two, but it's confusing. And descusting.

i would take him to the vets to be checked over. sometimes a fishy smell can indicate a cysitis/uti but could be something else more serious. i say this from experience unfortunately. have there been any other symptoms?

It could be that his anal sack or grease gland needs cleaning. I don't have boars so have no experience In performing such duties for my pigs but hopefully someone with older boys can advise on how to do this. There are videos on YouTube however some of these are excessively harsh. A check up at the vets may also be required

I'd check their little bums before panicking! I have 2 boars and one in particular gets a smelly bottom. A cotton bud and coconut oil clean out then a pet wipe around the area sorts it out....for a couple of weeks. It's a normal boar thing, but check his bum for a grey looking smelly goop. If that's not it then it's best to have it checked out.

As everyone has said - check their bums for impaction first, then give each of them a good bum clean using coconut oil. Try guinealynx for information about impaction and proper bum cleaning. Their bums can really smell at times, so this is most likely! Also, have you fed them any cabbage/sprouts? One of mine isn't allowed this because he gets very smelly!

Boars bums can smell revolting! Look out for impaction (especially in the older boar) and also for the white/grey goop and give the a cotton bud/coconut oil clear out. If this isn't the problem then try to identify which pig and whereabouts the smell is coming from and get a vet to check him over.

Hi can I ask where you get the coconut oil from? I had a look on YouTube at gland cleaning and people were using washing up liquid and dishwater soap. Surely that can't be right?

Thanks

Wendy

Sperm rods also stink to high heaven!
Yup, I came to say that. A few weeks back, while I was on the floor with Teddy I realised he stink pretty bad (strong fish as you say) and when I put him back in the cage, he rubbed his bum in the fleece and I spotted a little sperm rod. It wasn't big at all, but the bad smell did indeed came from it. I took it off the cage and nor Teddy nor the cage smelt like that again (until the next rod hahaha).

Oooh, sometimes I'm glad I don't have boys, not good with funky smells! You are braver than me Kell!
