Marshmallow (nearly 3) has been acting almost constantly in season for a few months. She's disrupting the group quite badly with her constant humping and I suspect I missed a scuffle at some point as she's just recovered from an abcess to the bum! I'm a little more nervous for this one as she had a tough time recovering and coming round with the abcess op but I really I can't leave her like this either so after a chat with the vets I'm going to email to book an ovariectomy.
Caramel (2 next month) has been having monster seasons and very confrontational with especially mal but sometimes every pig while in season. I've also decided after a quick chat with the vets to book her in for an ovariectomy. The nerves are real but the thought of having my happy herd of 4 back and the memory of spaying my last two hormonal behaving piggies for this reason and it being the best thing I ever did is giving me more confidence in my decision. After this my only unspayed sow will be mal, I briefly considered an elective spay for her but I think I've decided to wait and see if she has any problems or at least until I can get these two through first!
Hormonal piggies can really disrupt the group 😥 surgery is never an easy decision however so the pre booking nerves are very real! I think I will send the email to book tomorrow 🤞🤞
I plan to ask for gut stimulants post op and a high metacam dose! Wish me luck! 😬

Wishing you all the best with your two girls!

Good luck! For what it's worth I think you are doing the right thing by them it can't be nice having all those raging hormones all the time, not t mention the upset for their friends.

Thankyou 💖 I think so too 💗 herd leader nugget who is spayed herself has ic and I'm sure the hormonal harassment does not help! It is better than a lonely life if we have to seperate or true fallings out and more abscesses, thankfully I think if another pig did retaliate and cause marshmallows abcess is was done accidently as there is no true malice in the group just stress when being hormonally harassed! I know the group will be happier in the long term hormone free its just the anxiety of more ops! These will be spays 3 and 4 for us!

Thankyou- most appreciated as I will be asking for the gut stims etc for home since with us both working full time now we don't have any days off together and vet trips are trickier, the spays will be on my nights to work so Sam will be doing the post op care! This link will be very helpful! Thankyou 💖

Just being a know it all, the correct term is “oophorectomy” which is one of my favourite words, especially when paired with salpingo. So you can have a bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy which is removal of ovaries and Fallopian tubes.

I’m fond of the boys equivalent too “orchidectomy” although even fonder of the term “Visited by the Plum Fairy” 😂😂😂

Hope it goes well xx

Sows do usually bounce back quickly from an oophorectomy, one of mine didn’t need any syringe feeding or much real support and the other only needed it for the first night. It will be worth it to restore peace, and to help them feel less stressed and angry all the time.

Best of luck @Emx93 I'll be following this with interest as we now have 2 middle-aged hormonal monsters with swollen nipples who seem to be constantly in season- Blodwen, and now Piggle too... both age 4 so certainly in the classic haywire hormones age bracket! It does get very disruptive and very noisy and smelly too!
They have an initial vet appointment next week, we've waited until the head vet of our local practice who has done all our piggy surgeries previously is free for the double consultation :)

It's ovariectomy day for caramel 😬 mummy has been awake 26.5 hours now after a 12 hour night shift! Off to drop 2/3 small hoomans off at school then straight to vet drop off! Pack lunch at the ready 🙈😱 the nerves are real 😳

Hope all has gone well and you are now on the way back home again x
