Help please! Urgent!

If you are careful you can syringe water. Never give more that they can swallow in one go. You really shouldn't have tried to set his leg, but what is done is done. I hope everything turns out for the best.

A broken leg is a medical emergency, you should take her to a vet straight away. If you are unable to afford a vet then perhaps it would be wise to consider handing her over to a reputable Rescue (see our recommended ones in the links). Ultimately you have to do what's best for your pet.

I finally found a vet I could go to and took both my piggies to get checked out, unfortunately there was nothing the vet could do in terms of a cast or anything that would set the leg straight properly as even the x-ray was too expensive and said the best thing was to stop her from moving too much and give her some pain relief. (Which I am sure she is greatful for. ) As for my other piggy, he may have a problem but we aren't too sure about it and we were told to monitor it to see if it was just something temporary that may happen from time to time or if it was part of a bigger problem. Going to see the vet again next week when things are hopefully better 🤞

It's good you got your piggy to a vet & got her some pain relief. You say your other piggy is a he? Hopefully he is neutered if they are housed together? How did your girl pig break her leg?

Still not sure about how her leg broke but I am definitely going to try to do anything I can think of to make the cage safer because it has more than one level and we aren't sure if she fell or not. For now the two are apart and in separate cages especially because of his tendency to chase her and be a bit rough (without drawing blood). Usually the two spend some of their floor time together or we keep them in the same cage for a bit (both under careful monitoring) but she doesn't seem to mind the alone time

I'm really glad you found a vet and she's got some pain relief :).

So is your male still reproductively entire? If he is and you put them together frequently then you have a high chance of ending up with an unplanned pregnancy - even if you're right there. If they're in the right mood it will be all done and dusted in seconds and there will be next to nothing you can do to prevent it. Let them interact from adjacent cages, but please keep them separated unless you get your boy neutered (and wait out the 6 weeks post-op).

Can I ask why you didn't get a pair of the same sex? You may now also have a sow that is pregnant :( Please ensure they are not kept together, or allowed to "play" together, even under supervision. A pregnant sow & a possible litter will mean further vet bills, I'm afraid. It might be an idea to start a vet fund & save some money each month for future vet bills. If the hutch has a ramp, it could be she fell off the ramp & broke her leg. You could keep each piggy on one level, as long as they don't have access to each other, until such a time as you can get him neutered.

It would certainly make that leg get better quicker, if her movement is curtailed. Poor little love. Will she have regular vet checks & have you found out a way to keep water close to her! You can put it in a small bowl, but you may have to change it a lot, but I'm sure you know this. I hope she recovers quickly for both your sakes.

To be honest it is my fault entirely for not having two piggies of the same sex, I originally set out looking for two girls but to make a long story short the seller handed him to me for just a moment and I couldn't hand him back. I didn't know that things could happen that quickly so I will definitely go about looking for a way for them to interact without them getting too close and the water situation is all good after we moved her to a different cage

We all do the best we can with the information we have, and there are very few people who’ve never realised they could/should have done things differently. The important thing is to have the courage tolisten to advice, recognise where things could be made better and act to make a change - and you’re doing that :).

Don’t beat yourself up too much about the past, do what you can to make the future as good as it can be 👍🏻

A piggy with a broken leg shouldn't be around opposite sex because she could get pregnant.

If the boy and girl piggies have been together for some time, there is a chance she might already be pregnant.

If you have a 2 level cage you can convert it into two separate cages by removing the ramp and lining the upper level with floor Lino. Just cut the Lino with strong kitchen scissors to the size of the cage. You can get small off cuts from a carpet shop which is very cheap, just take the measurements along with you.

I did this to make a hospital cage for one of my boys.

Glad your girl has pain relief now.
Sounds as if you’re on a very steep learning curve with piggies- this is a good place to find advice and guidance.
I know I’ve benefited from it.
One of the best bits of advice was to set up a vet fund - I was so glad of it a few months ago when a sick piggy cost me over £200 in vet bills.

Hope your girl’s leg heals soon

So I have another problem now, some time ago my boy started crying when he pooped which we mentioned to the vet but they didn't see any signs of any large problems at the time but today blood came out, it has stopped bleeding now but he cries a lot louder when he goes to the bathroom than before although he seems fine when he pees, at the moment I really can not go back to the vet after the last visit and I don't really know what to do, can anyone suggest some advice, I am thinking about giving him some of the pain medication the vet gave me in case that makes him feel a bit better but I am not really sure if I should or if there would be any side effects to it because the medicine was not prescribed to him

I know you say you cannot go back, but he needs to see a vet.

I really can't, is there anything at all that I can do for him at home?

My heart goes out to your piggy and I'm sending your piggy good vibes. I don't know about your circumstances, but i am sure the PDSA help the pets of people who struggle financially. Hopefully there is one near you.

I hate to say this but I think you should consider surrendering them to a rescue
so they can get the care they need. Where are you based?
I agree with this Member.
One of your piggy has a broken leg and the other is bleeding, which both need to be in care of a vet. Seeing you are unable to give the care they need, it would be best to take them to a place where they can give the help your piggies need.

Also, because boy and girl piggies were allowed to play together, the girl with a broken leg might even be pregnant.

Your piggies need urgent treatment, I think like the others I would say surrending them, would be the best bet. Both are probably in pain. By not getting vet treatment until they are cured, or surrending them to an organisation that they can get treated. You will not get into trouble by surrending them, it's a no questions asked. You will get in trouble if you don't act as you are breaking the law.

I’m sorry for what you’re going through, I had 3 girls all poorly at the same time once, it’s a very stressful and upsetting time. I cannot however stress how necessary it is for you to take your piggie to the vet, you cannot do anything to help him at home. If he has a UTI/Cystitis he will need antibiotics, or he could have stones which need surgery - there simply isn’t any option. As the others have said, I think that handing them over to a rescue would be the kindest thing so they don’t suffer. Good luck with it x

Do the right thing and give your pigs to a rescue to find a good home xx

Unfortunately not. Is there someone who could lend you money for the vets? Perhaps the vet would let you pay in installments? Mine have done in the past.

I do hope you manage to get them seen as they could very well be suffering which I am sure you wouldnt want.
