Hiya, I'm new so I don't rly know what I'm doing! Okay so as you know from the title, my guinea pig has hurt her leg and I have no idea what she has done! Okay so she isn't putting weight on her foot but it's not sideways if you know what I mean. She isn't as active as usual and I'm getting worried.when I picked her up I checked her leg and whenever I touch her leg she will let out a little squeak and not let me touch it. I have been giving her 1mm of metecam for anti imflamitary.however I haven't been perscribed this from the vets.I have been subscribe the metacam for my other guinea pig with a leg problem. I have no idea how she has done it but I am worried about her. I just wanted to know if u think it's broken or not oh by the way she is sort of hobbling along to get food and stuff and she is eating fine and at the moment she is outside playing on the grass with her 3 other friends but she is not putting Any weight on her foot. Please get back to me ASAP thanks x

Hi there, if you pig has a broken leg you need to get her to the vet as soon as posibal , the longer you leave it the worse it could get.

Pleas take her to you vets , he shold de able to sort it
Get back to us and tell us how you get on :tu:

Definitely get her to the vets as soon as you can. It may be a sprain from her landing funny whilst leaping about but only the vet can diagnose, they may even need to xray. They will also be able to give you the proper dose for her weight for the Metacam. If it is a sprain water therapy may help and I can talk you though that after you have seen the vet.

Thanks very very much n xx

Hi , please let us know how she gets on :tu: by the way what is her name

I don't think we will be able to tell anything from a picture. She needs to be examined by a vet. It may just be a bad sprain - but only a vet can tell. I expect it is very painful - so she needs pain relief . - have you managed to get an appointment yet ?

She needs a vet visit to be assessed, as only a vet can determine if it is broken and can help to set it correctly if it is. If it isn't set correctly, it may not heal in proper alignment and may leave her with chronic mobility issues. It is also potentially very painful if broken bone ends are grinding together, so it's something that definitely needs to be seen.

I have had a closer look and personally I don't think it's a break as she is walking and putting more weight on it and I have had look at pics and I am pretty confident that it's just a sprain as it's not
sideways or anything and it's the same colour you know and she isn't screaming in pain like the vet said guinea pigs would do if they were in pain.however I am still booking her in and I will let you all know ASAP how she gets on.thanks guys xx

Please get her checked tomorrow by the vet. Piggies don't tend to scream in pain, they will squeak if you touch a sore spot especially an injury, but usually they will try to hide any illness as they are prey animals. Meanwhile restrict her activity ie no run time until the vet sees her :)

Just a thought , you said you would like to post a photo, ! how about the xray plate along side
Just ask the vet for a coppie of the xray plate, thats asuming your vet is using digital equipmant

(l would imagin very few vets having old style analog eqipment)

The plate is simple a photo, l have one of a blader stone pigs tummy

Did your other pig also injure their leg? I would check their living arrangements for any possible ways they could fall of a bridge or get their leg caught in anything whilst jumping.. My baby caught her leg between two bars mid jump when i removed her bridge (i learnt the hard way to remove her from the cage first). Her leg was bruised instantly and she didnt put weight on it immediately after- i scooped her up in a towel and let her calm and rest for 5 mins- but she walked as normal afterwards so i cant comment on breaks but i would check the cage, seperate your injured girl and put her somewhere small and quiet. An x-ray at the vets is necessary.

Hiya I don't mean to sound rude at all but when I went to the vets with my other little girl, they said give her lots of excersize and if they are in pain they will squeak quite loud so yeah thank you anyway ;-) x

Hello I will see what I can do thanks for all your help guys I hope they will fit her in as it's getting to winter and you know it's harder,i rly hope it's not a Brake as she will most likely not survive the operation if she has, all we can do is hope and cross out fingers xx

I am afraid your vet is mistaken. Pigs are known to hide pain until it gets to a point where it is quite serious and only then do we tend to notice there is anything wrong. We over time can learn to pick up on the subtle signs that are unique to our own pigs but overall they do hide pain.

Hiya, do you know any signs of pain if you know what I mean x

Not putting weight on the leg is a sign of pain. With mine it is the little signs. I know them so well that the tiniest change in behaviour puts me on alert, such as not following their usual food routines, staying in pigloos more than normal, and the worse one is facing the corner. Looking fluffed or hunched up is also a sign of pain.

I remember when my Max hurt his leg . He wasn't screaming in pain. I noticed he was limping when he came out for his supper and then he went straight back into his hidey.

He had a bad sprain and he was much better when the vet gave him a painkiller.

Thank you very much you have reassured me a bit better now, could u describe how his leg was please xx

I had a boar that had a sprain, he was put on metacam to help with the pain. He was limping when he did it, no squeaking at all, as @helen105281 said, guinea pigs are very good at hiding when they are ill with them being prey animals.

Even if is is a break, there are things the vet can do to help, it needn't be a death sentence. The fact that she is eating normally is a good sign. Please don't be upset.
