Dental Help, guineapig with teeth problems.

Oh my goodness. I need some help again 😭. Dianna is in a worse condition, she seems more weak and less willing to move around, and ive Also noticed that her eyes have sunken in/ got smaller. Could this be dehydration? I was giving her small amounts of water in a syringe because she wasnt taking water in her cage. Now i have no idea What to do, is it too late? Can i make it better by giving her lots of water? How much water? Any help would be great! Pics below. 😢
Or could she be passing on?

One more thing to add, sorry, she seems to not be chewing anymore? I am syringing her critical care and she seems not to be chewing? Oh Boy....

Oh dear, sorry to hear that. I'd give her water in accordance with syringe feeding guide on here, and phone the vet for urgent appointment. Hope you get a response from the experts on here too but vet is priority.

Is she still swallowing or fighting the syringe?
Guinea pig teeth have one of the fastest growth rates of all rodents because of the very abrasive silica in the grass fibre, which is the food source they have evolved on. Once the regular grinding down process in the molars at the back can no longer happen, the premolars will grow very quickly spurs that bridge over the tongue and trap it.

In the first case the overgrowth may be so great now that she cannot chew anymore. Please continue syringe feeding and offering water (NOT just water because a piggy doesn't need to chew to swallow syringe feed but you can soften it a little more to make it easier to swallow). Don't give more than 0.1-0.3 ml at any time and wait until that has gone down safely before giving more.
Not Eating, Weight Loss And The Importance Of Syringe Feeding Fibre

In the second case, if she is actively fighting the syringe, she will be unable to swallow or to process food.
Emergency, Crisis and Bridging Care until a Vet Appointment

Please see a vet as an emergency as soon as you can.

No she is not chewing, it is just going into her mouth. She is not fighting the syringe as she is too weak to. Thank you for the help.

Is she still swallowing or not making any movement at all?

She is not swallowing at all, she is moving her head up sometimes, but wont move her body unless she has to. We are taking her to the vet in 2 hrs.

Just leave any feeding be. It sounds like she is not able to swallow at all. :(

Fingers very firmly crossed!

She is not swallowing or moving, we dont think she is going to make it, she is breathing fast as she is laying down. We may euthinize her when we go today 😭( and i have stopped feeding her as i dont want her to choke)

Also, should i show my other guineapig she is passing? I dont want her to wonder how she dissapeared, or will this give my guineapig depression or anxiety about death? I dont know, first time guineapig owner.

If her and other piggy were friends I would let them see each other as often they take comfort from the other piggy when they are ill... even pigs who don't get on so well will comfort each other. If the other piggy is a mortal enemy and you had to split them because of fighting it will stress both to be in the cage together. I can't remember why they were split (? sorry) but if it was just because she was ill and now she might be passing the other piggy will at least have a chance to say goodbye x

Mine have reacted differently - some have just accepted it as part of life, George was quite frightened when Daisy passed but he still had Ivy. Just keep a close eye on them until it's time for the vets. I'm so sorry x

Yes they are split because Dianna didn't like sharing, and would bite and chase her. but they were fine in a split cage, just when they were in each others space, I held her near Dianna, I didn't let them get too close to each other. I don't know if that did anything. I'm so sad Paris will be alone now. Thank you for everything. ❤️

Hello everyone, I just got back From the vet. We made the hard decision to put Dianna down. She had over 4 years of good quality life. She was very ill and the vet said there was nothing we could do. She was struggling. I want to thank everyone on the fourm who had helped me with all the suggestions, tips and time. Dianna was greatful for the encouragement. ❤️❤️❤️

Aw so sorry to hear about Dianna 😔 You really tried so hard to bring her around and it sounds like you stopped at the right time. RIP lovely piggy. Hope Paris is OK.

I'm so sorry for your loss. It is heartbreaking when you have both been trying so hard, but she is free from suffering now. Keep an open heart and mind for Paris - you never know who will turn up in your life 💕
