help feeding critical care

we have just offered a bowl of 10ml CC to her, she showed no interest until i put a bit on the end of my finger, i decided to try a bit in the syringe, but allowing her to come to it rather than making her take it, she ate about .5 of a ml and decided that was enough for her.

we will try the CC this way from now on, offering twice a day, as much as she willing wants.

if she drops weight again tomorrow, we will make sure she gets minimum 10ml of CC as this is what shes been on the last two days and go from there, taking each day as it comes.

thank you so much for your response!

we will try to offer her feed in a bowl to see what she willingly wants to eat.

would you suggest starting the fibreplex up again because of her small poos? or should we just follow this plan and see how she goes?

I would mix some fibreplex in with the bowl mush if you still have it at home; otherwise a pinch of probiotics will also do. See whether she'd rather have her nuggets and a little extra soaked with some C&C and fibreplex. Mushed pellets usually go down well with recovering piggies of mine who do not like recovery feed very much.

@Wiebke as we have given her two lots of CC today, would you leave it at that now? she has only had a total of 5.5ml today but is eating just as well, if not better than her sister.

Look, I cannot tell you that; that is down to your owner's on the ground asessment. Put her on scales and if she has not lost any weight since this morning, then you can leave it at that.

If she has lost a little weight between this morning and tomorrow morning then contine with some voluntary topping up. If she loses more than 30g from one day to the next, then step in again with the syringe.

As long as the weight is stable or tending upwards from morning to morning, any top up is at your own discretion.

thank you.. i am sorry for all my questions, i just want whats best for my girl. i really appreciate all your help and advice, i get extremely anxious so the reassurance on what to do really does help. thank you again and i’m sorry!

As my sick piggies start resisting the critical care I pop a small ramekin dish of it in the cage. True, cagemates ’help’ but it’s there and available.
Mine love it with a bit of mashed banana stirred in.

Sounds as if you’re doing a great job but it is exhausting so make time for yourself too.

thanks so much, i will remember this!

della weighed in at 899g this morning, has taken 17ml of critical care in two sittings (willingly, she probably would have had more if i made it up lol) and is eating lots and lots of hay!

hi everyone, just wanted to give you an update on della. she is back to her normal cheeky self, eating like a pig should be, we have been weighing her each day and cutting down the CC as her weight has been up and today will be the first day we aren’t going to give her any as we think she would carry on taking it forever now she loves it lol! we have only given them both a sprig of coriander each over the last few days as i’m quite nervous introducing veg again but am hoping over the next week or so we can re-introduce all veggies so they’re back on the girls dinner menu!

can i just check, is it better to start of with just one of the veggies they used to get and feed a little of that each day then after a few days if no tummy trouble can i introduce another? so obviously they’ve been getting the corriander sprig each day which has been fine, can i now introduce some cucumber and feed that for a few days then pepper and so on, as long as tummys are all okay?

So glad to hear she is feeling better.

Yes but I personally would increase the coriander amount first back to the normal amount you give them, and then introduce other veg as you have mentioned - provided there are digestive issues.
