Hello,

I am wondering whether anyone has any advice. My pig Pip has had stomach troubles for a few months. I’ve been to the vets regularly about it but everyone’s kind of stumped. These are what I’ve tried. Her poo goes from normal shape but soft to small, tear shaped and soft.

- she is taking poo soup from my healthy pig Ginger. 3ml (that’s all she will take) daily mixed with probiotics and and critical care.

- She’s off food all together (including treats and dried herbs) which is due to vets recommendation. I’ve made up with adding loads of hay (Timothy and meadow hay) as well as readigrass.

- She drinks quite a bit at least 100ml daily. She has

- she seems fine in herself, no lethargy, no squeaking when weeing or pooing, no hiding away or arching her back etc

- She lost 2 friends last month and is currently trying to bond with little Ginger. So maybe stress or anxiety

- Her weight is stable it went from 1143 to 1157 which is in the range she usually is

- She has had her stool analysed at the vets and the report came back with nothing bad like parasites, blood or bad bacteria.

- She had a urine test last month that came back good. No blood or bacteria.

- She does get gassy and slightly bloated but it seems to go and come back a few days later. It’s been better off food.

- She’s been to the vets every 2 weeks and they palpated and found no lumps, or stones.

- She had an ultrasound last month which only brought back that she was full of poop and small amount of gas and nothing else of concern.

If anything I might book a full xray next week to see if there’s anything else. I know some pigs can get chronic soft poop.

Any advice would be amazing.

Thank you x

Just to add;

-She eats her full body weight in hay (she loves to eat 🤣).

-She drinks a lot but she’s always has.

-Her stomach doesn’t feel hollow just soft.

-The vet said I may need to give her poo soup for a while (1 month or more depending on her poo consistency)

-She was on pain relief for 2 weeks (I finished the bottle) but she seems to be doing fine. Her poo hasn’t changed from that soft consistency and weird shape before or after it

How long has she been on the poo soup? Mine took two weeks on it to improve and I found mashing the poop helped.

Hello, over 2 weeks now and 2 days. I mash it and add probiotics and critical care (it’s how she tolerates it). The vets said with rabbits she has seen them be on poo soup for months and it could be the same for Pip

I also changed hay over a month ago from supreme Timothy hay to hay box as supremes hay has been lacking quality recently (loads of dust) so I don’t know if it could be due to this as well

How old is she?

Have you tried removing the Readigrass?
It can be quite rich so isn’t necessarily suitable for all piggies

Are you using the coarse cut Timothy hay or the soft cut Timothy hay from haybox?

I ask this because the soft cut has been known to cause soft poops in other piggies

A mixture of both the “blend” box. So would course cut be better by itself?

It really depends on your pigs - for some their coarse cut is too coarse. If yours are eating the coarse element of it then it may be worth a try. (Mine wouldn’t touch it!).

The soft is preferred but as I say, we have had posts about it in the past where the soft has been too much and caused soft poops.

Either that or try their meadow hay. Mine are only ever fed meadow hay

So I might try the meadow hay. They seem to like soft textures the best and leave the big stalks in hay. I thought Pigs should have Timothy hay or is meadow hay okay to just give by itself?

Any grass hay is absolutely fine - it does not have to be Timothy hay - so meadow hay is absolutely fine.

These are what the poos look like. Can go from semi-normal in shape to small and pointy
