Junior Guinea Pig
Hi everyone
just some advice on a heart piggy if possible!
I actually just read my first thread from nearly 4 years ago, where Teddy was first diagnosed with an enlarged heart.
So basically Teddy has been maintained on 0.3ml Furos BD, this was increased from the initial dose of 0.1ml BD daily. And he’s also been on a quarter tablet of Fortekor OD.
So up until recently he maintained well on this, however a couple of weeks ago, I noted he looked like he had build up of fluid on his side and he wasn’t interested in his hard food. I took him to the vets who noted a weight loss, since his last check up, they also noted the fluid build up. They increased his Furos to 0.5ml BD and advised to monitor. I had to syringe feed for a few days but eventually he started eating his hard food again and is very interested in food!
however he still has obvious fluid collection on his sides, he’s not hooting and doesn’t appear to be struggling, although when he’s still, you can see he is using effort on breathing. So I took him back again and he’s now on 0.6ml BD, I enquired about changing his other medication, but theyre reluctant, they have again advised to monitor and bring back in if I have further concerns, he’s due a check up again next week.
Does anyone have any advise/experience of this stage of heart failure? Are we saying that at 4 years old, he’s at the peak of what I can do? Not sure what the max dose of furos is, the vets haven’t told me and they’re not keen on pushing it to that Yet, they don’t seem overly concerned with his fluid build up, of course in the vets he actually appears to have normal breathing, so hard for them to tell, they mentioned he may need an USS, as he doesn’t need to be sedated for that they said, just to see if there’s anything else going on.
Any feed back on this would be great
Thanks! The pic is Teddy bum now, a few years on from his profile pic!
