Does anyone happen to know of anywhere that sells good quality hay in Manchester? I'm struggling to find nice stuff for my pigs and buns, and as I live in a block of flats it's difficult getting big things delivered so I'd love to find somewhere I could go and pick hay up from. Any ideas? :)

the only one i know of is beal hey in oldham Beal Hey Animal Feeds Ltd

they were recommended to me a while back when i asked and i was hoping they would deliver to us but they wouldn't unfortunately and we weren't able to collect as we don't drive so we never used them in the end. but i know quite a few people do.

also, the society for abandoned animals rescue in stretford have rabbit awareness/care days every so often where they sell hay and forages etc (saw the pics on their facebook page) so that might be a good place to pick up some good stuff for the piggies :)

Where abouts do you live? If you are anywhere near altrincham Cheshire Pet Supplies sell and deliver big farm bales of hay, think they are about a fiver and deliver on a day when you're in. They also sell large 10kg sacks of burgess piggy and rabbit food. They deliver free within a 25 mile radius over that and I think it's £10. They also can order in things if they don't stock it

thank you for posting this - we are just within the 25 mile radius! do you get the hay and is it good quality? :)

Thank you both! Wow, Cheshire Pet Supplies have a lot of stuff! I'm in South Manchester so definitely do-able :D

@biscandmatt :)

I have had quite a few bales from there. Last three bales have been lovely and the piggies and buns had left very little. But there have been one or two I've not thought were brilliant, but this was at a time when hay generally has been poor. I'm going in this Saturday to pick up some bits so I can have a look and see if the current batch is any good and let you know? Xx

Hay for pets , they do a far variatiy , and will send you a trial sample :tu:

Popped in today and picked up a bale. It has gone up to £7 (first time in 9 years or something his supplier has put it up). Bale is pretty good, nice and green. I've taken some photos in natural light and with flash so you get a better idea. Who knew taking pictures of hay was so difficult! I'll upload them later as I'm just out at the moment

thanks. they sent me the details via email and said £7 aswell. also said the dimensions of the bales are approx 5ft x 1ft x 1.5ft for anyone else interested. we're trying to work out whether we would have space to store a bale that size at the moment! x

@biscandmatt Eeek sorry sorry! Had a hetic few days!

First one without flash second one is. Couldn't get it to pick up how green it iss but you get an idea of the stalky/softness of it :nod:

Haha yeah I have to split my bale and store half of it in the shed in one of my old horse's hay bale bags and the other half in a box under the kitchen table!

@biscandmatt yeah really easy, the sections are more 'clean' and come apart easily compared to say hay for pets (which I found would forever conjoin and I'd end up dropping and spelling it all over the place!) I store about three or four sections in my box and that lasts me about 3/4 days but that's feeding two rabbits and 12 piggies! So it should last you much longer! But the whole bale lasts me about 3 weeks or more if I supplement the bun's hay with Timothy.

The other reason I split it is because it is pretty heavy and I couldn't cart it from the shed every day. Oh! And it comes wrapped it a plastic film for travel etc. which if left in can make it sweat so you might need something to store it in if you haven't already :)

brilliant, thanks. i've no idea where we would put it! everything extra of the pets seems to end up in a corner of the bedroom! but oh well... :)) honestly, i'm upto my eyeballs in hay in this house... it's everywhere! :)):)):)) but think i'll have to try this bale one aswell :roll: luckily i saved the old breathable bags from the timothyhay.co.uk hay so could transfer it into those for now and figure out the rest later! :))
