Hay mites/static lice treatment and storage

i hope you are successful in eradicating hay mites.some of my piggies had them at the weekend.taken to the vet this morning.stronghold prescribed.to bath twice one week apart.2nd one to eradicate any new emerging eggs .:vom:

We contacted a vet about our hay mites, they couldn't see us because of covid but suggested we bought Xeno 450 online and treated ourselves. We did the three treatments, two weeks apart, scrubbed the cage each time, froze all their wooden toys, replaced hay, etc.

It’s had zero effect, absolutely useless. We’re trying Flea or Die shampoo next. After that if nothing changes it’ll be another vet call I imagine. Our pigs aren’t bothered by them at all.

I have hygrometer in my flat and it is constantly high humidity in my place. I saw other posts about parasites such as booklice/woodlice etc., I think I might get a dehumidifier ASAP and see if the low humidity can help the situation. If it is right that human eyes cannot see hay mites, then they are very likely to be booklice/woodlice surviving on the damp cardboard or wood and happened to crawl on my piggies.

We keep the window in our pig room open, humidity hovers around 40%-50%. I know everyone says you can't see hay mites, but you absolutely can if you have a keen enough eye. I see the egg sacs left on the hairs, and if I run my nails through their fur, the mites come off on my nail and you can see them moving around. My boyfriend struggles to see them, but I see them plain as day (particularly when they're wiggling). They are not lice: they're far too small, under a mm, and along with the presentation ('pepper' fur, concentrated around on the butt, pigs don't scratch, no hair loss, you don't see them running around on the pigs fur), they can only be hay mites.

I totally believe that, I put the mites on white sheet paper and my bf couldn't see them either but they are so clear to me. My pigs have no hair loss but they do scratch a bit. Since ivermectin doesn't help, I've ordered lice n easy shampoo and will give them some nice bath after it arrives.

I have dehumidifier and a still had problem with them until I started freezing the hay.

@moodysuzy totally agree. It looks like fine ground pepper.

Good luck! I'm using flea or die, we can compare results and see which works best 😂
