Hay For Pets Rye And Timothy Hay

Does anyone buy this hay? I've just got a bag for the first time, and it is so brown, there aren't any green bits at all. I also can't see many timothy hay seed heads. Is it usually like that?

The guineas don't seem that impressed. The two least fussy ones have eaten some, but the other two don't seem very inclined.

I do feel disappointed. I guess it's back to the more expensive Alfalfa King stuff. They love that.

:D I bought the Hay for Pets trial pack that included the Rye and Timothy. My herd were not keen on it either. The Ings is their favourite. I bought a big bag of just Timothy from H4P but, like the stuff that you got, it is quite brown and the piggies are not that keen on it. Fetch.co.uk (part of Ocado) sell very green Timothy hay in small bags; 1.5 or 2.5 kg.
 
I use hay from timothyhay.uk, my cavies love it ,very good qaulity,,very green,and large amount in bag,10 kgs for approx 20 pounds.
 
I was also disappointed with this but had bought it as apparently it's better for my pig with bladder stones. I have to admit, I've gone back to buying the Ings hay as it's much better quality, green and sweet smelling, the piggies much prefer it
 
I use both the Timothy & rye and the meadow hay from H4P and my boys LOVE both types. They also lived the Ings but I hated it because of the twigs in it (was worried they would hurt themselves) so they don't have that now.
 
l got a copple of sacks from of hay for pets makes . it a change
though it is rather pricaly so l scrunch it up before giving it to my pigs
 
I've been thru my fair share of hay!

Originaly used PAH timothy hay as was on a budget, but got a bad batch one time and gave all the girls the runs!

Switched to Alfalfa king timothy and they loved it, expensive however! Used it for a long time but found quality declined (maybe seasonal) and my girls started going off it (all of them!)

Few months ago Tried 2014 timothy hay from timothy hay.co.uk - girls loved it, i loved it- excellent! Ready to order next bag, only 2013 hay available.. Much harder hay, girls picked all the soft bits and seed heads out, leaving 3/4 hay uneaten!

Next try (current), Hay for pets timothy and rye- very brown, girls arent keen. Not eating as much as id like, picking bits out of it.. Also I'm hugely allergic to this hay and normally only slightly bothered if i touch my eyes before washing hands- iv had to take antihistamines daily since using it!

Currently waiting on a large bag of Ings hay.. Should be here thursday. I dont care if I'm allergic, if its green and they eat it then i'll take it!
 
been using Timothyhay.co.uk for a couple of years now, still the best on the market.
 
I wasn't impressed with the Timothy from hay for pets my guinea pigs didn't like it , I got the ings and they left half of it ,just ate the greener bits , the meadow hay was okay bit softer though ,I am on the look out for a decent hay as I seem to put a lot in the bin, as the fussy monkeys just wee on it!
 
That looks nice hay , I just looked on the site and it seems expensive to me for about 4-6 kg it is about £21 , that would last me just over a week I think.
You buy in bulk?
 
I'm not sure how many kg I get to be honest. I order 3 boxes of meadow hay and 1 timothy hay but no idea how much each box weighs. The 4 boxes cost me £30
 
I would be interested in any cheaper but good quality hay though. I've always been delighted with the quality of the hay from dustfreehay so I've never tried any others
 
Each box it says is 2kg so it is expensive , I would expect super hay for that price as meadow hay in b and m works out at about £1.00 a kg , and it's not that different to the quality of hay I have bought online , they waist as much with either one.
 
yes it is, if you buy 9kg it is a lot cheaper can't remember but it is around £19 I think, still more expensive but I don't mind the ings Hay but my last bag had a lot of brown in and that's what mine won't eat.
But it is good for them hiding in it makes nice hats for them lol
 
Oh that's good @tallulahmay. I may try out the hay from hay4pets and just hope it's not very brown as my piggies won't go anywhere near hay that is slightly brown haha. 9.5kg for £18 is not bad!
 
@Sian25 the bag I'm on just now is timothy and rye from hayforpets.. Its very brown, girls arent keen and I'm not impressed.

I'm waiting on a bag of ings being delivered now, hoping its more green and palatable! Its the same price as the timothy, £18 for 9kg. I usually stick to timothy hay as i have a bladder piggy- i hope it doesnt cause her any problems.

If so, my next stop will be The Dust Free Company- but my bank account and i hope we dont get to that stage!

The box u pictured above, is that the meadow or the timothy?

@Adelle the picture I uploaded is the timothy hay. The meadow hay is nice and green too. I've never had a batch of hay that I've been disappointed with from dustfreehay
 
i have used hay for pets and found that the only one any good is the ings hay, but i still think that is expensive 4kg for £14, still looking for good quality timothy hay at a reasonable price
 
I've just had my first delivery of Ings hay from Hay for Pets and am really pleased (photo below). It is really lovely: long but fine strands and very green and fragrant. I bought the 9.5 kg for £18, but when I weighed the bag I'd actually been given 10.3 kg - so £1.75 per Kg..
To help me choose I bought the sample of all 3 types:
- the Timothy & Rye was quite brown and the guineas didn't seem too bothered about it
- they loved the Meadow but my OH immediately got a massive hayfever attack
- the Ings the guineas loved and it didn't give my OH hayfever!
I use hay from a local farm for bedding (£0.30 per kg!). It is very brown but good for tunnelling / hiding in!Ings hay.webp

My ings arrived today too! Lovely and green, the girls like it and i havent sneezed once! I had major allergies with the timothy and rye one, was horrible!

I have a bladder piggy so hoping non timothy hay wont cause her to have a flare.. Time will tell and if not, think i have a new permanent hay!
