I have used Pets at Home hay since getting Toby and Barney and I have to say that I have never been happy with it. Its not like it was in the 80s when it was long strands of fluffy hay, its always really short and lifeless (for want of a better word) - it just goes flat with no hope of piggles being able to burrow in it. The last batch was horrendous and quite dusty as well so I turned to the internet.

I'm sure that folk on here have mentioned the Hay for Pets website before but I am just so happy with the bag of hay that I got today I wanted to share the word.

It is a bit pricey - £16 for a bag but its going to go a long way. It smells beautiful and has really long strands so not much goes a long way. Ideally I would buy a bale from a farm for £4 but storage is an issue. Anyway - there aren't any photos of the product on their website so I have taken some pics if anyone is interested (the wine bottle reference was copied from the guinealynx site).

And nests and burrowing are now possible

is the Ings hay better than the meadow hay? There wasn't enough information on the site for me to decide which one so I played it safe with the meadow stuff.

we get hay for pets here aswell - the timothy and rye and the soft meadow hay.

I've just bought probably the most expensive bale of farm hay ever. I cost me lets see, £94.50! Why so much? Well there was £58 for three days car hire, £32 for diesel for said car, and the extortionate sum of £4.50 for the hay itself! Oh OK so I went to big sis's for the weekend and picked it up while I was there. It also cost me £11 for a stick bridge and 99p for a corncob treat and then there was some fresh herbs, more cucumber, a small water bottle for the cat basket big sis gave me to transport them in. Blimey, nothing like a cheap weekend away is there!

Spoilt Brats.

I get the meadow hay from hay for pets too. Its so soft, and lasts ages. I also get the timothy and rye for my rabbits, which they love because its stalky. But my piggies absolutely adore Oxbow Western Timothy hay. They squeak like mad for it.

They don't ship outside the uk :( i would have liked the samples to see which one my piggies like.
it is so hard to find things in sweden! no one posts here and if they do it's so expensive.

I may have to give this a go! Currently buying the Natures Own bale from The Range and I'm always happy with it (apart from the odd thorn!) but may treat the piggies next pay day :) The bag looks a fair size too!

I love Hay for Pets but unfortunately we don't have enough room in our tiny flat to store their "small" bag of hay. Always smells lovely, the pigs go nuts for it and get weird looks from the postie. Ours love their Meadow Hay.

I reccomend the ings hay too, 4.5 kilos is £12 I think and it lasts my four around a month, they love it :)

I get farm bales now but I used to use hay for pets but deliveries dont work for me now :-) natures own from teh range is really good hay for those who cannot have deliveries x

Mine arrived today. Looks stunning and smells lovely. Lovely long strands

Have done an order from here for a bit of variety as have drastically cut down my pigs' dry food, they already have meadow hay, Oxbow Orchard grass, Alfalfa king Timothy hay, Burns oat hay and Vitakraft vitaverde rose hay but am giving the Ings hay and timothy and rye a go. Will be interesting to see how it compares to the American and German stuff.

I was thinking of trying Hay for pets, my Dad was getting me bags from Just for pets locally but I've just switched to a small pet shop I've found about 5 miles away as I'd rather support a smaller shop that doesn't sell animals. The hay looks good from there - seems dust free and I know she's been looking for a good supplier and other customers say they have had no problems with it.
As I've been clearing the garage out I think I'd have space for a bale but won't swap to that until summer - need to find out a reliable place /farm - if its straight from a farm there could be a risk of fungal/dust.
I also want to find a decent storage unit/bin as loose hay would be a fire risk in the garage as I have a dryer, fridge and freezer running in there too.

The hay from Hay for Pets comes in quite thick polythene bags so you might not have too much of a storage issue.

Might give this a go.Got meadow hay and pillow hay from petsupermarket and really disappointed.Cut short and four of mine wouldn't touch it.Left it four hours and hardly any gone.Soon as I put long stuff from town in they tucked in to it

I am having a hay dilemma! I ordered the Ings hay for a change instead of the normal meadow hay. They piggies seem to LOVE it but I'm not so keen. There are lots long thick pieces of hay (?) in it, that are so thick I cant bend them they only snap. I am removing all of these because I am worried about hay poke, it is a total pain! Also - there seems to be a lot of tiny seedy bits (only way I can describe) it isn't 'dust'. I ended up just throwing those bits out, total waste. It may just be that I am being picky.

So anyway - I am now torn between carrying on with the Ings because the piggies love it or going back to the meadow hay and so keeping me happy!

I do like Hay for Pets hay but unfortunately it's not dust extracted and that is an important factor as hubby is always sneezing and the piggies are in our lounge. I now use Dust Free Hay - quite pricey but they do( apparently) use a better extraction process that other so-called dust-extracted hays and buying two large bags works out reasonably economical ( lasts about a month). It is really nice hay and it really is about as dust-free as you can get. It's usually next day ( or the day after) delivery if you order on weekday.

I'm currently giving my piggies timothy and Rye am going to get Ing hay to see how they get on with it

All my lot (8 rabbits and 2 guinea pigs) have a bale of organic local hay and a large bag of timothy hay from hay for pets each month.

My vet said that the timothy and rye is the best one for their teeth as it is nice and fat and stalky. They love love love it. Good customer service too.

I was using Pets at Home hay too and was getting some really awful quality, dusty and short hay which my piggies weren't touching. Last bag I bought I took it back. I got a bag from Tesco as I needed one quick and was quite surprised at how much better it was than I was expecting. Not perfect but not bad either.

I've tried sooo many different hays over the last few months, and both of mine won't touch the dust extracted stuff - from anywhere! It seems they enjoy the dust?!

My piggies recently got a bale of the timothy and rye hay from here and they adore it and it's great for their teeth! :)

Problem with the Timothy hay is that I only put it in their hay rack so I don't think buying the 9.5kg bag is the best thing to do as I don't know how long it will be good for. I could buy a 2.5kg bag but that costs £10 (9.5kg = £16) so it is not cost effective. Guess I am stuck with the P@H Timothy.
