Hannah’s Herd thread!

Always lovely to catch up with you Hannah
What lovely photos ❤️
Wonderful to have your sister there and the spare bedroom looks fantastic 🥰

So a couple of weeks ago, while having dinner outside I spotted a tiny rooster pecking around in my horse paddock. It was close to getting dark so very likely to get taken by a fox so I somehow managed to catch him. I drove him around to a house I thought he may have come from but there was no answer so I kept him for the night and put a ‘found’ ad on the local FB page. The next morning he didn’t seem that well, he was missing many feathers on his chest and also seemed very tired not very perky. And also wasn’t eating hardly anything. He also kept shutting one eye. No one came forward to collect him so I kept him in the aviary for a few days and gave him vitamins etc to help him feel better. I was quite confident that he wasn’t carrying anything contagious to my girls so I decided to let him out to meet them which really helped brighten him up.

He took an immediate liking to ‘Dot’ the smallest chook, a Japanese Batam cross which I’m assuming he is. But she’s the feistiest chook out the lot! He followed her around all day but she paid him little attention nor patience. He avoided everyone else, especially the three giant Sussex ladies whom are 5x times the weight of him. Wise move. They’re the ultimate bosses. But they are fair. They paid him no attention, in fact no one paid him any attention which I was very surprised at. They haven’t had a rooster before, and they weren’t bothered about him in the slightest. Maybe because he’s so quiet and has a very nervous disposition. Over the next few days he decided Dot, though smitten with wasn’t worth perusing. So he followed around the 3 new girls, They are all placid with the same nervous disposition as him so he fitted in well with them. They have been very kind to him.
He hasn’t shown any signs of wanting to mate with anyone yet, which I’m glad about. He’s started crowing but other than that he quietly keeps himself to himself. He doesn’t seem to know that when I throw food.. that it’s food..he’ll have to soon learn that here as my girls demolish food in seconds leaving no scrap behind, you’ve got to learn to eat quick amongst these fat ladies.
He’s very wary of us humans and I can’t approach him, But just like the 3 new rspca girls whom have really come out their shells and get very close to me now he will
Soon learn that he can relax here.
So it looks like he’s here to stay and I now have a teeny tiny Rooster.
Meet ‘Howl’

The day I found him, drinking out of a puddle in the paddock:

He's a lucky boy to have found you Hannah. You and Jon have such big hearts and I'm sure you'll make wonderful parents in a few months.
Thank you Betsy, that’s very kind of you. :luv:
I'm sure the baby will grow up to be animal mad like me, growing up with all these pets!

Oh Howl certainly picked the right place to stop for a drink! What a lovely little chap. Hope he continues to know his place in the pecking order & your peace in the hen house continues. What a wonderful family you & Jon are building.

What a handsome boy. He has certainly landed on his feet with you.
Chickens are such fun to keep. We used to have 3 rescues in our garden.x

Omg he’s a very lucky boy - how lovely that you rescued him Hannah he would have been predated for sure.
He’s fitting into a wonderful home with you and Jon and your furry family.
I’m sure your baby will be animal mad ❤️❤️❤️

I’ve been such a busy bee lately. After having. My sister here we had a week in between and then Jons mum and Auntie arrived from England. They’ve been here a week and it’s been lovely having them here. They leave next weekend.

The piggies are all happy, Though Lions teeth are still not growing correctly. He’s off for another tooth trim on Thursday.
The pigs actually got 10 minutes each of grass time in the run the other day! A rare occasion!

Ive had a terrible stressful time with my chickens lately, One of my new girls went missing for about 4 days. Couldn’t find her or any trace of her anywhere. Came to grips with the fact a predator had taken her or she’d just left and wasn’t coming back. And then one day I was having a nap and got woken up with a startle, a chicken screaming. I went outside and saw a hawk leaving, turned around and just saw a pile of feathers from my little Pekin Bantam, Rosie! I was frantic! I didn’t see the hawk leave with her in its talons so I frantically was running around and crawling in bushes looking for her. I couldn’t find her anywhere, I was inconsolably sobbing ( the neighbours must have thought a human had died!). It was terrible, I love Rosie sooo much! I just couldn’t believe this had happened, such and awful death. Jon finally got home from his dog walk and I was in pieces. Then about 20 minutes after the incident Jon found her hiding under the wheelbarrow in the hay barn. Not a mark on her, she was absolutely fine! I was so happy, but not crying happy tears as I was so stressed! Her fluffy feather must have saved her life and she managed to slip away from its grip!

So I came to realise my new chicken, leggy. Who’d gone missing must have been taken by the darn Hawk. I was shattered.
2 more days later, The chickens now being shut in the coop safely away from prying hawks. I heard one of my chooks, close to the house? And it sounded awfully like one of the new loud girls.. I look out the front door and guess who’s wandering around.. LEGGY! I was so happy! She’s still so skittish but managed to herd her back to the coop. The next day I watched her do her great escape, wow she can REALLY high.. I sneakily watched where she was going and it turns out she’d made a nest around the back of the house in a tiny tin shed where I store the Guinea pig runs. The triangle run was upright and she was laying in the house part, very safely tucked away. I felt bad raiding her nest but it was for the best, safety and wealfafe.
So happy a hawk hadn’t eaten her!
I’m still being altra cautious with hawk watch after what happened to Rosie. They are hunting so much at the moment. We’ve attached more shade cloth to the coop so I can feel a little more relaxed while we’re it work.

I now have a bad mite issue with my chickens, likely bought in from Howl. So I have that to deal with asap too.
I also have two very lame chickens that need another vet trip.

This weekend I’ve been searching for my friends horse that bolted off into the bush (woods). Been driving and walking all weekend searching for her. She was missing for about 22 hours. Finally was found in a sheep paddock safe and well.

My horses are all good. I’m feeling quite sad at the moment as I’ve put 2 of my saddles up for sale. I just don’t ride anymore, and now I’m pregnant it’s going to take even longer for me to get back into it. And I sadly can’t afford to have those saddles sitting there worth money that I desperately need for vet bills and other life expenses :( I’m gutted to be honest. I miss riding so much. I have someone potentially buying one of the saddles tomorrow..

Gosh what a lot to happen - our pets are our furry/ fluffy children so I can easily get how upsetting it is…..Just shows tho …you have some smart little chooks ! It is sad selling the saddles but it’s just for now and your life is going in a different fabulous direction - you’re just planning ahead - dear Hannah it’s always lovely reading your posts and hearing your news ❤️🥰

Gosh I’m so glad all the chucks are alright and not taken by the hawk. One day in the future you will be riding again and you might have a new little horse riding companion too 😊

Thanks everyone! There certainly is a lot of stress involved when having so many pets to look after. But I wouldn’t change it for the world :luv:
And yes I’m sure I will get riding again some time in the future, hopefully not too long though. My western saddle sold tonight, I was sad letting it go. But equally happy for the money I desperately need lol!

A couple of photos from a few years back of me reminiscing on the old times!

Gosh, what a stressful time you’ve been having with the chooks. So relieved to hear they’ve survived the best efforts of the hawk. But what a lot for you to deal with. Hope you’re feeling a bit better x

Gosh, they must have a story to tell! I’m glad they all appeared unscathed.

Congratulations on your upcoming addition to your family. I’ve been away a long time so only just realised. Hope all is going well and you’re not suffering too much with it. Exciting times 😊

Thank you, I’m 19 weeks now and thankfully I’m feeling pretty good. Tired in the afternoons (and a bit grumpy sometimes lol) but other than that I’m feeling quite well

Hi all!
We had an awful day on Tuesday, it was 37 degrees and super windy, thunder and lightning with no rain. In that weather that was just asking for trouble, fire danger is so high with those sort of conditions. And to make it worse there was a powercut as soon as the dry storm started. So no aircon all day, my house was like a sauna, my poor piggies I was so worried about them but they managed really well. I struggled the most I think! And to add to it all, with the no power there was no internet or data working which is a bit scary in that weather as around 5pm I could smell smoke in the air and the sky was tinged red from fire, I was so stressed that there was a fire nearby! But I couldn’t access the emergency app to check.
Found out there were really bad fires in the Grampians which is a couple of hours from me so the intensity of those fires were visible from all that distance.
Started to cool down around 8pm and our power returned at midnight.
It was an awful day!

I gave Buttons a haircut the other day as her hair is crazy and thick. She now looks like a loaf of bread lol. It’s still very thick, I should probably cut a lot more of the thickness out.
Lion is still having dental issues so getting his teethies trimmed at the vets every 4 weeks ..

My Lucy pony isn’t quite right on her feet at the moment, she seems either foot sore or lame, I can’t quite put my finger on it. My farrier can’t see the signs of laminitis in her hooves just yet but we are treating her for that as there are a few early signs she’s showing. So poor Lucy is shut away in her own paddock not allowed constant access to all the yummy food. She’s on a strict diet for a couple of weeks. It could also possibly be arthritis developing, but at the moment I’m just not sure.
Here she is in her diet paddock with her treat ball.
