Yes you did post it, we ask that posts about the same issue are kept to the same thread instead of new threads being started each time. Your post has been merged with your original thread.

Would deleting one of my two posts help keep it easy to follow? Just wondering, maybe more hassle than helpful

Hi everyone, happy friday!

My boy has weighed in at 1078g this morning, around 30g down from yesterday. We started this process at 1145g roughly.

He has been on for the past 5 days 20-25ml of critical care as a supportive measure as he was/is eating hay and veggies plus any treats he can get his hands on.
I would say for the first week (since the 5th of March) he was on 30-40ml and then in just the past week he was put down as he was maintaining for a couple days.
When i was at the vets yesterday she recommended we just stay on as we are so we can see how the new upped doses of medication go for him but I am obviously seeing that he’s not stabilising himself or eating enough to maintain his weight.

I would assume if she saw that he had lost more weight, upping it would be the next step.
He is still acting the same, eating and getting into everything. No changes that way.

Would upping to 30-40ml be the best option? I don’t want to go up too much as i want to see how this medication affects him and as he is eating hay I don’t want to them over feed him.

Hi, my boy is bloated out of nowhere. I said in another thread there was a large fart produced last night but apart from that he has had little to no bowl movements.

As you can see above he is on multiple gut stimulants as well as probiotics and prebiotics. He is up to 30-40ml of critical care a day as his weight was dropping and that has worked well.
Yesterday he had a squeaky nose, sort of what you would get if you had a cold. I listened to his lungs and they were clear and I could hear it was just in his nose (he also had a little nibble on my ear, but I am not sure if that can go towards his daily intake:xd:), luckily that has cleared up today.
This morning he got all his medications and around a 20 minute bloat massage, gently of course and he got a couple poops out, and a couple pees, unfortunately.

We have a vet appointment booked in for Friday afternoon as this is the best I can do, and as he has shown no sign of clear recovery (up and down) we are most likely going to just arrange a investigative appointment.
What I'm wondering is there anything I can do for him now, what can I expect from an investigative appointment and the aftermath.
He is aged 5, had pneumonia when he was younger. I would not say he is weak as he is still eating and moving but there is definitely something bothering him and causing the stasis which could/would weaken him generally. He has had on and off issues with URI symptoms but after a while our vet decided that it was likely there was something, either a smaller nose 'canal' or I can not remember exactly what she said but we have a procedure in place and they usually clear up within the day. The vet explained the obvious risks of anesthesia in smaller animals but I guess I am a little more worried. This is my first anesthetic in piggies even after owning them for decades.

I am not sure that removing veggies is an option for us, as I am still trying to get him better with the stasis, I don't know if I feel comfortable removing that even if it is a small portion of his daily intake. If this would be a good step to take please just let me know.
Thanks!

At 4pm when I was feeding him he had a poop stuck in his anal sack, not like he was lethargic just not pushing or "constipated" i guess.

I tried to get it out but only got half, and even after a 20 minute massage nothing came out, would offering water through a syringe help. I have seen him drinking but I can imagine water would be helpful to perhaps make stool easier to get out? Even if not to help his stool in general water is good.

Please do remove veg for a piggy with bloat.
He needs to be fed enough critical care each day to keep his weight stable.

Offer some water with each syringe feed.

I forgot about removing vegetables, somehow i thought he was exempt since he’s ill. I have done now and will

I have run out of fibreplex, I wasn’t aware as my S/O was making it for the past couple of days. We are going to the vet Friday and if i were to order it now it probably wouldn’t come till Friday anyway so I think I may be better off waiting.
He still has enough of his medication and his critical care to last him till Friday and technically the fibreplex wasn’t prescribed.
Thanks for your reply

I have a 5 year old boar who is bloated and also has been suffering from gut stasis the past few weeks.

He is on Emeprid, Cisapride, Loxicom (dog) and support feeding. (And up till i ran out yesterday fibreplex)

He was bloated last week which resolved within the day but I have woken up this morning after finding he was quite badly bloated yesterday, to no poops in the cage.
Vegetables have been removed and he was fed 40ml of critical care yesterday.

I have to feed him the critical care for his stasis and inability to stabilise his own weight but I just read online that syringe feeding a guinea pig with bloat can cause overload in the gut, especially since they aren’t pooping.
I let him run around in our hallway last night for 10 minutes to try and get his gut moving a bit more and he is still moving/eating.

Can a guinea pig have too many medications and end up with bloat? Atleast that’s what my mother IL suggests and I cant see really how that would work, surly it would go the other way and give him diahorria.

I’m sort of lost on what to do, we have a vet appointment booked Friday for his stasis.
Do i continue support feeding and tummy massages and give him a chance to work this through? Is it more urgent to get him to the vets sooner?

This is our bloat guide Digestive Disorders: Not Eating - Diarrhea - Bloat - GI Stasis (No Gut Movement)

What information has his weight check this morning provided?

As he is already on medications and is still struggling with bloat, I would contact the vet today
He weighed in at 1105g which is down from yesterday (1117g) but his bloat was worse yesterday.
His stomach doesn’t feel particularly hard but it is very full. I have had a listen and doesn’t sound like water in an empty stomach, which is good.

I think i’m just going to call the vet anyway and see if they have any appointments earlier, thanks.

Side note, should i remove support feeding until I can get seen by the vet most likely this afternoon? He is eating hay generally it’s just been shown he is not stable enough to support himself fully but i do not want to overload him with stuff he isn’t getting out the other end.

Hi
Please continue to provide top up feed, as much as he is willing to take until he is fully stable and the bloat has safely departed. Right now, your aim is to support and to stabilise as much as you can, not to withdraw support at the first sign that he is a little better again but without having made sure that he is actually stable.
Keep in mind that severe bloat is like a tsunami. It comes in waves, which can be hours, days or sometimes weeks apart. After a severe bloat it can take a very long time for the gut microbiome to fully recover and to stabilise.

We cant catch a break,

His bloat went away finally after three days. We had a phone call with the vet yesterday afternoon looking to plan an investigative appointment but unfortunately we are away for a couple days for my birthday next week so we have to wait until the week after.
We have a phone call today hopefully booking that appointment.

We are getting prescribed more meds to get us through to the week after the next and picking them up today.
I woke up this morning to a beautiful rattle (not!) from digby, he has quite a bad URI i assume. I plan to tell the vet over the phone and probably bring him in, as i assume she wouldn’t just hand over the medication without seeing it herself.

His weight is stable and he seems to be okay in himself apart from the whole gut/medication cocktail he has going on.

I’m tired and somewhat sad, i wish there was a quick fix and I am also somewhat disappointed in myself for not booking the investigative appointment earlier although I really did have my fingers crossed the upped medication would work for him.
Thanks for all your help throughout
