Guniea pig not even a year old and has small lump under chin. Fatty lump?

Peanut was 5 years old when he had his operation, he did really well and is still here a year on telling his cage mate off. I've had several piggies operated on for various reasons, they have all been fine. Have a good read of the post operative thread linked above so you are prepared, please try not to worry.

I can’t offer any advice or experience but just sending you positive piggy vibes for your little piggy. Wish you all the best with her op!

There is always some risk with anesthesia, but most pigs do just fine. If the vet is able to take out the abscess completely (walls of the capsule and all), that will fix the problem and is the easiest outcome to deal with for both you and your piggie (just lancing and draining the abscess requires a lot more aftercare.) One of my pigs had an abscess removed completely off her lower back and it was the easiest abscess I've ever dealt with!

For what it's worth, there aren't guarantees, but I've had pigs go under anesthesia six or seven times, as well as a Syrian hamster who had repeat anesthesia for dental issues, and they all did fine. I really do think you are doing the best thing going forward with this operation. Best wishes to you and your piggie!

I'm very worried about it..how long do you think the procedure will take? Also do they inject the Guniea pig to put it under?

My Christian had a HUGE abdominal abscess removed a couple of years ago (the size of a large egg) that had adhered to lots of internal structures. He came through it OK. I know what you are going through. My thoughts are with you. Have a hug

Hello all,

I emailed the surgeon about my worries and this was the reply. What do you make of it?

Dear Tom
The anaesthetic will be a pre medication with a sedation which helps with pain relief and reduces stress of induction of anaesthesia with gas, maintenance will be on gas anesthetic. I use local anaesthetic around the surgery site which reduces the amount of anaesthetic gas I need to use. There is always a risk with anaesthesia and I do my best to minimise this as much as possible by reducing stress (bringing a friend and familiar food etc) keeping them warm and encouraging food intake as soon as possible post operatively. We monitor the anaesthetic very carefully, as Fudge is otherwise fit and well I feel the benefits of surgery outway the risks. If we leave the abscess until she is sick the risks will be much higher. I am happy with operating on 2nd of July unless you notice any changes.
Best wishes

He recovered really well and soon got back to being the normal cheeky boy he is. This is where his abscess was first picture is all you could see from the outside. Second picture is scar post op.

He was under anaesthetic for just over an hour.
