Ok do not want a debate on whether meat eating, vegetarianism or veganism is best, but i do have a question

Guinea pigs have sensitive noses and most animals can by smell tell if you are a meat eater or plant eater, thus determining along with other things like where your eyes are placed whether you are predator or prey animal, thus friend or foe!

Does anyone notice any differences piggies has towards humans that are meat or veggy eaters? Do they settle quicker with vegetarians? It was just a thought i have no idea to the answer.....

I'm a strict veggie, bordering on vegan and I can't say I've noticed a difference in the way animals behave with meat eaters. I've rarely been bitten by my animals and generally once they get to know me they're confident with me. My OH is veggie too and every animal I've ever owned has made a point of biting him at some point, it's kind of a tradition.

Oh, just to add to this. My horses used to show an unhealthy enthusiasm for my friends hamburgers when we were out. That borders on cannibalism! But I guess they are bigger animals with different prey instincts!

never had any of mine treat me any different because i eat meat as compared to my kid sister (i say kid - shes 21 now and been out in the big wide world for 3 years) who doesnt - She gets bitten by her rabbit at least once a year, but ive never been bitten by any animal except a hamster (I'm NOT a hamster fan - nasty bitey little things).

Possibly its because her rabbits were ones i bred and were handled by me from a very young age?

Ive always put it down to HOW you handle them - calm and confident wins the day as far as I'm concerned - i also chatter away non stop[ in a low calm voice when I'm handling them - I'm sure the neighbours think I'm nuts!

I'm a meat eater and I've never been bitten*.

*exception being bites where I've caused the animal some degree of pain or been involved in causing that animal pain or discomfort (e.g. tugging on a hair knot accidentally)

was thinking less about being bitten but more about forming bonds and trust and whether they trust a fellow herbivore quicker than a carnivore?
