I got New Guinea pigs 4 days ago and they are both shy and scared. If I sit in one spot without moving they will come out and run around. I have a blanket over the cage and cannot see what they are doing. One guinea pig has this new habit of chewing or rattling the cage. I don’t think it’s because she want to come out or need more cage room. And she has toys that she doesn’t play with. There is enough hay and pellets. Is she trying to get out? I would let her out but she is way to scared, so I don’t really mess with her. I know it’s not a serious problem but she is starting to do it more frequently.

How big is their cage?
They generally don’t play with toys, but instead like to run through tunnels or play In big piles of hay
Otherwise bar biting is something some piggies do and you may never find the reason

one other thing I wanted to pick up on - please ensure your piggies only have one tablespoon of pellets per pig per day. Once they’ve had their tablespoon per day, then remove the bowl. My piggies get just 30 minutes each morning to eat their pellets and then no more until the next day. They should never have constant access to pellets as they are the least healthy and the least important part of their diet. Overeating pellets leads to unhealthy weight gain and due to to the calcium content, eating too many pellets can mean they take in too much calcium which runs the risk of causing bladder stones. Hay is the only food they should have constantly.

I didn’t know about the pellet thing:( But there cage is 4x2 c&c cage, and I have two 1 month old guinea pigs. I didn’t have them for long so it’s good I know about the pellets now😊
Thanks!

Are they boars or sows? Please double check them now, especially if you got them from a pet shop or breeder.

If they are boars, you will have to make their cage bigger - 2x5.

Please single check. (Some) Breeders and pet shops quite often get it wrong. The sooner the better.
