Guinea Pig Losing Weight On Baytril

Glad to hear operation went well. Hope he is soon home safe and soon. Hugs. xx
Thank you. Rang up vets this morning and he’s not eating properly on his own yet so they may need to keep him in another night 😢

@GiznYogi Is there any chance that you could visit and try to feed him? Or take in some food that he really likes?

I had an issue a few years ago when my vet wouldn't release my pig after an operation because he wasn't eating. It annoyed me a bit so I demanded to visit him. I took him in the veg that he liked and he immediately started eating. They were offering him veg and hay that he didn't like (he was a fussy boy)

I actually went in to see him last night and brought lettuce he likes and his nice Timothy hay and although he was incredibly quiet and looked petrified he did start nibbling the hay! I’ve just spoken to them and they’ve said he may eat better in a familiar environment so I’m picking him up later this afternoon to bring him home and I’ll give him critical care food and his particular hay and nuggets.

@GiznYogi That's excellent news! I hope he continues to perk up and eat when he's back at home.

I always think that as long as the owner is willing and able to syringe feed them if necessary they do so much better in a familiar environment.

He’s home now and eating a tiny bit of hay but not much. I’ve given him critical care twice, I’ll give him some more before bed. He now on marbocyl, metoclopramide, metacam and some fluid to keep the guts moving. I’m hoping he’ll liven up a bit soon, poor boy.

So just a little update in case anyone’s interested. Gizmo is doing really well. He’s eating hay by himself, some fresh grass and few dandelions too as well as lettuce. No more spinach, parsley, cabbage for him now unfortunately. He’s enjoying his critical care and metacam but hates the gut stimulant stuff. His weight is stable since the operation at 1025gm. All looking very good so far.

And just one more update! Gizmo is doing amazingly. His weight is back up to 1110gm! His wound has healed really well and he’s lively and actually enjoying eating lettuce, grass and hay. He’s now on Oxbow Cavy Cuisine (low calcium) which he’s taken to quite well. Not had any blood in his urine for days now (one tiny spot since op) so all seems well. Finished his metacam course yesterday so hopefully he’s not in any pain. Fingers crossed all the changes I’ve made to his diet will ensure he doesn’t get any more stones.267A5D02-A66F-46F5-B6AE-CCE3B7E37736.webp

Hi again. Gizmo had been doing really well. He’s now 6 weeks post bladder op. I had thought he was doing really well, lost a bit of weight but was handling the new diet well, eating lots of hay and just lettuce and some vegs. He’s had no cabbage, spinach, parsley but then yesterday I noticed he was a lot quieter and drinking a lot of water and less hay, greens etc. Today there was suddenly quite a lot of blood in his urine, probably 4 patches of it but he seems much livelier and eating and drinking normally! Could it be he’s got another stone or UTI or is it normal for him to flush out blood, maybe from his stitches? (Which I’ve been told are dissolvable but haven’t dissolved yet on his tummy. Any help really appreciated.
