I was wondering if Guinea pigs passing gas is normal? I know it seems a bit of a weird question but he passed it twice loudly. And I don’t know if I should worry. Thank you!

I don't know for sure, I don't think guinea pigs are able to pass gas very easily, which is why it's serious when they get bloated. I advise just to cut down on any veg that can cause it for now, example...

Kale
Spinach
Any lettuces.

Alright, will do. Thanks you!

Are u talking about farting or just gas?

Piggies can certainly get gas. But it’s an indication that their diet needs some attention. Any veg that cause gas in humans can also cause gas in piggies. If the gas builds up in a piggy it can cause bloat - a painful condition that if left untreated can potentially be life threatening to a piggy. Has your piggy recently had a change of diet or extra veggies or new veggies?
here is a link to our diet guides which give a good indication of veggies to feed regularly.

Hi!

Gassing is always a sign that natural fermentation process has become unbalanced (dysbiosis). with mild gassing, please take your piggy off any fresh food for a couple of days to allow the gut to rebalance again and slowly re-introduce the veg.

Please keep in mind that over 80% of the daily food intake should be hay, with a small amount of fresh herbs and veg making about 10% and 1 tablespoon of pellets the last 5%. Most people unfortunately see veg as the mainstay of the diet and over it, which can result in digestive problems and be ultimately life shortening.

If the belly is extended and had to the touch, please see a vet asap as an emergency; severe bloat can kill.

Mild bloating can also be caused as a secondary problem when pain or growths are impacting on the gut (ovarian cysts, bladder stones/severe cystitis/kidney pain, arthritis, tumour or extreme pain events.

When I hold him I can feel him sort of passing gas. And I just heard familiar sounds of farting coming from him twice.

I ran out of his typical veggies so for the last 3 days he was mainly given peppers, broccoli and tomatoes, which probably is causing this. So I’ll stop giving them to him and wait a few days and start giving him his lettuce in smaller portions later.

Please stop all veg and see a vet if this continues.

Please do not feed fruit (including tomatoes, which are technically a fruit) too much or too often as this can cause potentially fatal lip infection (cheylitis). New veg can easily cause gassing, especially when given at quantity.

Thank you! I’ve been giving him more veggies than usual lately so I’ll cut down on that and keep my eyes on him!

Alright, will do! So should I wait a little bit until I give him his usual lettuce or can I give him that now?

No please wait until everything goes back to normal

NO fresh food whatsoever for 1-2 days please to give your tummy time to get on top of the tummy upset! Follow the advice on mild diarrhea in the digestion guide in this case.

If he has been having broccoli and doesn't normally get this then this might be your culprit. It's part of the brassica family (which includes cabbage, sprouts and cauliflower) and, as with humans, these can make piggies more gassy than normal. I'm sure in a day or two all will be back to normal
