Our Guinea Pig started dragging her foot today. Does nayone know what could be wrong. I examined it and it seems fine. She did not squeal when I touched it. She is able to walk around but drags the right hind leg. She is eating and drinking but seems a little of today.

Please advise.

It could be what my guinea pig, Cookie has at the mo. It's called Over night paralysis. No-one knows why it happens but it is apparently very common in guinea pigs. Guinea Pig experts think it is to do with a calcium deficiancy. I was told that giving your guinea pig liquid osteocare really helps but may take a while to kick in. Is she still as bright as a button? If sitting down does it look like she has nothing wrong with her? If so I would definitley give this a try. You can get it from Holland and Barret and should give her 1ml twice a day for a coulple of days and then when you see a change in her drop it down to 1ml once a day. Do NOT be tempted to give her to much calcium as too much can result in bladder stones whih I would imagine are particulary painful for piggies.
Hope this works!

I don't think it is the paralysis thing as this usually affects both back legs and they are both dragged. I would think it could be a sprain which can right itself. Keep en eye on it.

I would recommend the Osteocare liguid the results show very quickly:) worth it I have used it with fantastic results.

have you checked her toes ?, some guinea pigs get toes that are curled and sore to walk on as the toe is so curled the nail digs into fer foot

Be careful about using Osteocare. Too much calcium can cause other problems for piggies like bladder stones.

Why don't we let jaynenowell decide? What are you going to do then Jayne? or is the piggie better?

If something is wrong with one of my pigs and I dont know what it is, I take them to see my vet rather than guess :)

Take piggie to vet, it could be "Bumble-Foot" if the foot is dark, or blistered--she may need antibiotics immeaditely...did you check the nails, have you clipped them lately?...I have opened a forum called "Piggie Health" let me know how she is after the vet sees her!

Is the foot swollen? Are there any scabs/redness on the foot? If you notice any of these it might be Bumblefoot infection and is most likely leathal if left untreated. Feet infections in guinea pigs are a lot easier and quicker to treat if starting early, otherwise it might lead to bone becoming infected.

This thread is two years old!

There is no need to give up: all our replies will provide vital information for guinea pig owners, it will save guinea pigs' lifes. I'm a Web Developer and can tell for sure the more relevant keywords are accumulated in the thread, the better are chances of people finding it in Google when trying to search for information on guinea pig treatment.

that's interesting to know. I don't know much about web stuff. How do you get your link to be top when someone searches?

As stated above, please don't bump old posts. They are still available for reference and yes, searchable by Google but old threads with new posts can quickly become extremely confusing.
