Well I haven't been on here much lately, at the end of April I rushed Grace to the vets as she had gone all limp & wasn't eating, I was expecting her to be helped over Rainbow bridge, her lips were grey & her ears were freezing cold. About 90 minutes before the appointment i managed to get her to eat some watered, hand picked grass & she seemed quite perky by the time i got to the vets!
The vet was concerned by her colour, but decided she looked just a little too 'with it' to help her over the bridge, she had Loxicom & Baytril prescribed to give her a chance & see how she was in 24hrs.
Well she fought her way through in true feisty Grace style & went back to normal, although a little more sleepy than her usual snoozy self, but colour & appetite restored all 'output' returned to normal too
Everything was going well until nearly the end of May, i had a phone call at work that Grace was acting strangely & had gone limp/sleepy, i rang for updates a bit later & she was eating normally, than again a bit later she was having a seizure & what sounded like she was running for the bridge
I managed to get away from work early & got home to find her led looking floppy, i scooped her up to comfort her & she seemed to snuggle in comfortably, we had a cuddle for about half an hour & i thought she was just going to drift away. She then had a massive seizure &i had to get her to the vets to ease her pain. she had another seizure in the car on the way there & the vet agreed it was the kindest thing to help her over Rainbow Bridge.
It's highly probable that it was a stroke or stroke related. but i guess we'll never know for sure
Now i know we aren't supposed to have favourites, but Grace was right up high on my list of Guineas, I'd had her for 5.5yrs roughly & she was about 6yrs old. She was my little hairy bear, with paws that looked like big, hairy paddles. with her chequerboard bum & brilliant white chest & nose stripe, with such a laid back & docile attitude to life. She was ultra cuddly, feeling relaxed enough to sleep with her eyes closed on me, usually sporting a 'chooken' or two
Even the vets said she was a dream to handle when she went in for a bladder stone removal, then her abscess to be removed about 12months later
I really miss you, my gorgeous little chunkster, lardybum
Orca on the day of her new pad mate's arrival
Now... Orca's never been on her own & she was showing signs of deterioration with no Grace, so i tried all of my local rescues & a few a bit further away, i even rang 3x pets at homes to see if they had any adoption girls, but no joy, i even tried Gumtree & preloved! i eventually came across an ad for baby guineas local to me, i rang up & she had no females available at present, although she did have two females ready to drop any day, she asked if i was in a rush for them & i explained i needed a companion for Orca, she said well i do have one girl about 13wks i was planning on keeping, but if yours needs a friend then you can try her.
Well i got there & the guineas all looked well looked after, healthy & a nice big run/enclosure in a shed for them. She knew her stuff about guineas & all the risks of breeding roans/lethals etc.
She was also happy to take the little female back if Orca didn't like her.
Well she handed me, the sweetest little 'black fox' guinea pig & although very skittish as it was a busy household(dogs barking/baby crying/washing machine rumbling away) she settled quickly in my arms & she came home to meet Orca.
There was some slight confusion with Orca as she knew it wasn't Grace & this little piggy was fast, very fast! but they bonded well & the newbie liked the idea of her new big sister, she would crawl underneath Orca & peep out between her legs nawwww
We have had a episode of lice on Squiggle, but i guess its the stress of it all, so they both had a xeno 50 treatment off the vet & i can't see any little critters on her now
she is slowly getting used to everything & is happy to cuddle & take food from my hands, although she's not keen on being picked up initially.
I've finally decided on her name... i think...
she looks like a squirrel & she's very wriggly..
So meet baby Squiggle
and underneath Orca
