woo hooo ;D ;D ;D

Seriously I would change your vets. I seem to recall all they ever wanted to do was destroy this guinea.

Sending the little one loads of love and healing, poor sweetie.

yes lucinda but they have taken ginger to 3 different vets and they all said pts for ginger. and that just :tickedoff: :tickedoff: :tickedoff: me off. just cause she is 8 years old there is no reason to end her life. i have heard of piggies living up to 12-15 years so why shouldn't ginger? sending her hugs :smitten: :smitten: :smitten:

Started Ginger on baby nurofen today. She's eating loads at the moment but I have to hand feed her because she can't ove around much. She manages her veggies which I put next to her but she seems to prefer being hand fed her dry food. Will let you know how progress goes :)

I have stopped the Potters Tabritis tablets now Ginger is taking nurofen - do you think this is the right thing to do? I know from looking the ingredients up online that one of them is a mild anti-inflamatory/painkiller so I was concerned about it interacting with the nurofen.

perhaps ring vedra or pm maryh and they would be able to help you, am so happy she is eating and at her age why should she be hand fed and have her meals in bed O0 sending ginger hugs and healing vibes :smitten: :smitten: :smitten: and to say you have done a wonderful job O0 girls send :-* :-* :-*

It would be best to stop the Potters while using Nurafen.

Paws crossed that this will make Ginger more comfortable. Let us know how you get on.

Thanks MaryH - will do. She was a bit sore this evening because the scab come off her foot and it bled a bit so will bathe it with salt water now to prevent infection. It now looks like a human blister where the top has come off. Maybe it might be a good thing in a way because now the bad skin is off maybe new skin will grow and make her more comfortable. The other sore she had on the same foot seems to have disappeared.

am so glad ginger is still improving O0 hoping she keeps improving and you're doing a great job with her :smitten: :smitten: :smitten: hoping she gets din din in bed again and hand feed like the queen she is :smitten: :smitten: :smitten: hugs and healing vibes and the girls send :-* :-* :-*

I was a little doubtful about using Nurofen,as I have never heard of it being used for gps.I phoned my vet todayshe is a gp expert) and she said Nurofen should not be used on animals,in fact,no NSAID should.Nurofen causes severe reactions in horses and dogs, and certainly should not be given to rodents.Rimydal should not be given either, although my vet does give it sometimes immediately post op as a one off.It certainly should not be given on a regular basis. This is the reason that your vets will not prescribe it.

I do not know how a diagnosis of a bone disease can be made without an x ray or scan, there are several things that could be causing Gingers problem.

I agree that she should not be pts if you can control the discomfort.Metacam would be best. She is an old lady and it could just be arthritis.which is fairly commen in elderly pigs.

Thanks for letting me know that MaryH. It was Vedra who suggested using the baby nerofen. If I've got to get Metacam on prescription then I've got no chance of helping her because no one I have seen will prescribe anything for her. They say to pts so I don't know what else to do :( :-\

Do you have a vet that is at least open minded enough to talk to another vet?..My vet is a gp expert and is happy to talk to other vets by phone or email. She has already helped a lot of owners who are too far away to get to her,by advising there local vet.She might be able to pursued your vet to try Metacam,.I do not see why a vet would not at least give Ginger a chance with this.My vet never gives up on a pig.I have had gps that other vets would have put down, and she has saved them.If you would like contact details let me know.

Thanks MaryH. I would be grateful of any support in this matter. I feel sometimes like I am fighting a losing battle. I don't think it's fair that an animal is not given a fair chance :)

really hoping ginger gets better and is back to her usual self again in no time. O0 as you know i am in oz and maryh's vet is in the UK and her vet emailed mine and together they planned zoe's surgery and treatment,so you are in excellent hands O0 hugs to you and ginger :smitten: :smitten: :smitten: and don't give up,maybe a whisper of the rspca might get your vets rethinking as they should not be allowed to refuse an animal treatment :tickedoff: :tickedoff: :tickedoff: know we're thinking of you both :-* :-* :-*

There has been some improvement over the last couple of hours. She's now eating for herself and making every effort to get to her food bowl. She is very wobbly and her one front leg is sore I think because she wont use it even though she can move it fine.

Hi rw3399...how is Ginger today? You've been going through so much. How is her little foot? I didn't know Rimadyl was not good for guineas. Maryh, if you are reading this...do you know what damage it can cause? I've been giving Ricky Rimadyl for months now, on and off. Mostly on with all those abscesses. My vet said it's like an Ibuprofen and anti-inflamatory. She said it's like taking Motrin. I want to make sure I'm not doing any damage to Ricky. He's had no side affects, but do you know if it's something that will affect him later? I want to make sure I'm not harming him.
I feel very sad for Ginger, the poor baby. I guess they get all the aches and pains we get as we age. As long as she can get around and doesn't seem like she's in much pain, I would not pts. But I know it must be hard watching her wobble about. I hope you get a medicine that works for her to relieve her pain. Please keep us posted...love to you and Ginger.... :smitten: :smitten: :smitten: :smitten: :smitten:

Rimidyl ( Carprofen) is a NSAID and these should not be given to animals.Rimidyl is formulated for dogs, but a lot of vets think that the side affects outweigh the affectiveness. It can cause liver failure and gastrointestinal bleeding. It is certainly not recommended for gps.

The4 alternative,Metacam, can cause kidney damage, but only if given very long term.My vet has been prescribing it for gps for a long time, and has never had any problems. I have used it a lot on my pigs with no problem.

Ginger's foot has bled again but a new scab has formed on the bottom so I'm hoping it might be a less painful for her now. Shes still eating and drinking ok but sometimes an't reach a piece of food so I pass it to her and she chatters to me once I've done it. She is still very alert and when she hears the food she sticks her nose out of the hutch (still as nosey as ever). Hope Ricky is well x

I think there has been some progress with Ginger today. She has done a lap around her small hutch - I don't think she would have won the 100m sprint though  I think it's a good sign that she is trying to get around with 3 dodgy legs. I am waiting for MaryH's vet to phone me so will update you all when I have more news.

I have just spoken to MaryH's vet who was friendly but said it was hard to give a prognosis over the phone. She suggested I try and find a different vet in the area who may prescribe metacam. She thinks it may either be a neurological problem or a progressive problem with the spine as I mentioned the problem she has now developed with her front leg :( I have made an appointment with a different vet for Wednesday evening so we'll see what happens then :(

I have just been to sort out her foot and tried to move the front leg which oves but there is a horrible grinding/crunching noise coming from the shoulder :-\

hoping all goes well with ginger at the vets on wednesday O0 sending hugs and healing vibes to you both and keeping the grand lady in our prayers :smitten: :smitten:
:smitten: perhaps you could give maryh's vet the name of the vet you are seeing and they can talk together about the treatment for ginger. girls send ginger :-* :-* :-*

I just wanted to wish you good luck :smitten: and I hope you piggy gets though this. :smitten:

Something came up yesterday and didn't manage to take Ginger to the vet so have another appointment tomorrow evening with the same vet. I tried to move her front leg but it has gone stiff and she squealed when I tried to move it but when she's in her cage she stick it out to the side so I just over all her feet with hay to keep her warm as her circulation isn't great at the moment. I'll post what happens tomorrow.
