I've noticed my Cookie likes tinned and frozen garden peas. If we have a few left, I give her some and she eats them. Is it ok to give them cooked garden peas?

veg for piggys should be fed raw and fresh :) Tinned or frozen veg isnt good for piggys, it has no nutritional value for them. so only fresh and raw :)

Oh no. oops! Ok i'll stop feeding Cookie tinned garden peas. :/ When we have some frozen peas in, i'll let them thaw out and then give them to Cookie

Thanks for replying

But doesn't frozen have a higher nutritional value? I don't know, I've never fed frozen food to the mine, and not sure how happy I'd feel doing it, but they do say that freezing stops the vitamins etc from breaking down. MAkes me wonder.....

I will stand corrected but aren't most frozen veg blanched before being frozen therefore part cooked?

I think so, that would make sense, I think some are fresh frozen, I suppose the preservatives in them aren't good either.

i just wondered about freezing our own veggies. Carrots and the like.

I dont know, ive just read on numerous sites that veg should always be fresh, never cooked, tinned, or frozen...

It sounds right, I'm just wonderign that's all, i don't think you're wrong :)

this is what ive found...

It's not just heat that cooks fruits and veggies, freezing does it too. It breaks down the cellular make-up and kills the good live enzymes. Essencially, freezing "cooks" food too.

Frozen veggies are precooked or parboiled. They lose nutrition, lack natural enzymes and can upset an herbavore's system as it is not designed or prepared to digest food that has been altered by heat and missing the essential enzymes necessary to good health and digestion. Just because they like it does not mean it is good for them.

frozen veggies tend to lose some of their vitamin and mineral content when frozen. It's always better to feed fresh to ensure pigs get the proper vitamins and minerals they need.

:)

candywishes is correct you must never ever feed tinned/frozen/or packaged foods of any sort,
all they need in there diet is pellets, hay, forages, veg fruit.
frozen and tinned food can be as bad as feeding other no no foods

alright, i'll stay clear from frozen thawed out peas and tinned peas and get them fresh :)

thanks everyone for helping me :)

fresh is best but the debate is
frozen is generally soon after harvesting so ok ish
veg in supermarkets can be aged from the time it leaves farm until it gets to market.and then kept in freezers
Choice have done studies to find these results

so fresh must be truly fresh
