Hello,

I have just bought two baby boy guinea pigs. I haven't had any since being a child and I am a bit concerned as they have both been jumping around and twitching. Through research online I have seen that it could potentially be 'popcorning' but also they have been itching so i'm worried that it could potentially be lice or fleas?

Also these two boys who were together when we got them seem to play fight? is this normal?

Any advice would be brilliant! Many Thanks :)

Sounds very much like popcorning to me. They will just jump up & sometimes twist while in the air. This is a sign of contentment, so they must be happy in their new home.

Sounds like popcorning to me. I have a little boar who is forever doing it, even when lying down. He sometimes looks like he is having a fit!
If they are itching a lot I would take the mm to the vets to be checked out. Do they have any hair loss or marks on their skin?
They could just be having an itch but if it is excessive it could well be mites or may be a fungal infection, as these may often be passed on in petshop pigs.

Where about are you based? We do have a recommended vet finder at the top of the page, if you are in the UK.

Thankyou very much they've been doing it more and more so i'm hoping that it's just popcorning. Another thing it would be great to know is when I handle them they sit very still but sometimes do make little squeaks and also purr which I think is a good thing? Or is the fact they stay still meaning they are scared and I shouldn't be handling them quite yet?
Thanks again! :)

I think they are probably scared. A low rumble means they dont like what ever is happening. But they also make a purring noise when content but it is a slightly different noise.

I always worry one of my girls is having mini seizures but it's just popcorning haha. They can be deceiving! Always best to ask though :)
