ive now found someone who is willing to donate free hay for the piggies (a 25kg bale per month..every bit helps!) it is usually used for horses and cows but they want to 'donate to a good cause'!
now it looks fine, not as green as id like but smells divine!(i could sniff it all day long......!) my only worry is i think it may not be fully dry? i dont know if its just really cold or could it be damp?(though i thought damp hay smelt rotten normally?) piggies seem to enjoy it though. could it just be a not so great quality hay?

well I'm gonna stick with it for now, piggys are happily munching on it still...if it was bad they wouldnt eat it surely?

A lot of people use bales of hay , if the piggies don't like it they won't eat it. I have used baled hay for years without a problem.

bad hay smells musty and horrid! if it smells nice it is probably ok my girls get a mix of baled hay and timothy and excel herbage and dependant on the bale most times prefer baled

you'd be able to tell if it was wet it wouldn't smell nice.

I wouldn't count on the guineas to tell you though. I put a big handful of shop bought hay in a while ago and they started munching happily, next time i went to use it i noticed it smelled really musty not like that hay normally smelt so i binned the lot. Next lot I bought smelled normal again.

If you are concerned it may be a touch damp, put the daily amount you'll use in an open cardboard box and let it dry out for a day/overnight before putting it in for the piggies.

Lucky you!

lucky me indeed, but it took a lot of work convincing the farmer! ive been sending out 'flyers' to local farms explaining what we do and could we possibly get a discount on hay bales and/or sawdust (its the season of giving and all that malarky), after 4 weeks of 'nagging' someone gave in...(!) seems they like small animals as well as big! thank for the tip of putting it in a box to dry out, shall try that :)
