fleeces?

Yesterday, I just actually completely changed the piggies cage over back to a layer of newspaper, megazorb and hay - they were on fleece when I built the c&c cage.

I found that I didn't like the fleece and neither did Toby. I had a hay section and that's where Toby spent most of his time and he used to popcorn whenever I put fresh hay in for him, not sure about wee Flower as she runs and hides whenever I appear.

I found the fleece just looked continously dirty/messy and felt I was constantly washing fleece/vetbed. And I live in a flat so was constantly having stuff lying out drying.

Looking at them today, the piggies appear to be much happier now that it's all hay and I feel that that's a more natural habitat for them too.

Am thinking of trying this, would it work with rabbits as well, and is just for indoor piggies or could i use fleese for my 2 they are in a hutch in the Lean-to so not tottally outside

I've tried my piggies on hay, then fleece, then back to hay!
They definitely prefer the hay, but i guess all piggies are different. :{
When they have playtime out of the cages,i have them on fleece, but that's just so i dont have hay all round the house!
The fleece does look very nice, but the hay smells lovely.
I think that whatever suits you and your piggies best is good. ;)

i had my two piggies on a layer of newspaper than sawdust and a layer of hay where they usually lie down and i changed back to fleece today and they are definetely more happy on it they havent stopped popcorning all day :(|)

My piggy cage is starting to smell :(

The towel underneath the fleeces is damp to the touch but the puppy pads underneath are dry. I'm going to remove the towel tonight and give it a wash and see if this solves my smelly piggies xx

I did a layer of fleeces, a bath towel, puppy pads, a hand towel and newspapers.

Going to remove the towel, but it has soaked up well, just has become smelly :( xx

I just use a thick wad of newspaper under plain fleeces, It lasts around 4 days before it needs washing this way, ive not noticed any smell. (apart from the stinky boys smell :x)

Yesterday night i've had to take the fleeces out :(

I went to remove the smelly towel, when removing this, the puppy pads were slightly damp and abit stained so I removed these too and put a new lot on then newspapers ontop. When going to put one of the fleeces back in they were abit smelly too so I filled the cage with hay instead because i didnt have a spare fleece to put down.

The fleece method has lasted me Saturday til Tuesday , does this sound about right? xx

It may be because the fleece is new, bung them in the wash and on the line they will be dry in no time for you :)

You've got them in the wrong order rolleyes

Okay at the bottom put some newspaper if you wish on the correx, although this is not really necessary.

Then put a layer of old towels, then the bed mats/puppy pads. I then use a mattress topper, cut to size, if you use one of these make sure it is 100 % cotton.
Then I put the fleece cage liner on the top. The mattress topper wicks the wee away to the pads underneath, & it won't smell.

Hope that helps rolleyes

I love using fleece, especially as I have two white girls, they used to get yellow bums before we moved onto fleece :red

My piggies are definitely loving being back on the hay - even wee Flower seems to be a lot happier. And I'm happier too - no more hassle cleaning fleeces etc. :)

I've been thinking about using fleece for a while, I've got 2 outdoor hutches in my utility room (tend to have pigs indoors Sept to May) and I'm sick of sawdust on the floor and getting in my baskets of clean washing!
This year, maybe over the Easter holidays I an thinking of converting my shed into a pig mansion. Then with the help of some heating maybe they could stay in there over winters in the future, although I worry they would be overlooked in there in the depths of winter?!

First job though will be to go fleece and mattress topper shopping.
