Just wondering if any one has a fire safety plan for their piggies should there be such an emergency.

It's something that I've worried about with my dogs, so I made an escape plan for evacuating my dogs should the worst happen, so they won't get left behind in the burning house. With pigs, you'll need something nearby to hold them in while you evacuate, unless their cage is small enough to pick up and carry, so it should really be planned out in advance I think.

Has anyone here thought of this already and made an evacuation plan for your piglets?

I keep a pet carrier set up in the animal room for my guinea pigs,
That way I can just put them straight into it of there is a fire,

I also regularly check the fire alarm, once a week, in the hall way so I can be alerted to a fire if the stove catches fire ect.

The only thing I worry about is the amount of animals I have,
Three guinea pigs inside plus two hamsters
How do you choose between animals in an emergency situation if you don't have time to get everyone out.
I hope that never happens

Exalant question, got me thinking about safety precautions!

I have several carriers ready to go at a moments notice should I need to evacuate quickly, for all my pets. We have two cars, one would have the dogs in, the other would hold the pigs and smaller pets in the carriers.

I agree with above posters - it is well worth having a carrier available to evacuate your piggies in an emergency . I also have a small fire extinguisher in their shed ( the type you can get for cars ).

This member has designed a sign in case something happens when everyone is out

I have plenty carriers, tubs and boxes etc in the animal room, ive planned how I would get them out mainly because some of the other pets have heat lamps or mats so its a real possibility if something malfunctions. I luckily have windows either side of the room, one with large bushes outside, it would be very easy to lower carriers down onto it or drop down the less fragile animals using it to break their (and my) fall.
On a large clean out day I did a trial run of getting them all out and into carriers (except the cat..I dont think he would have approved!) I went snakes, piggies, lizards then frogs in order to minimise the chance of getting bitten for smelling like food. I didnt time it but it was pretty fast so id like to think id stand a chance of getting the majority of us all out safely.

since my are outdoors, all is well. However, I have a storage unit and have several carriers ready to go quickly. This is for a number of reasons, such as emergency vet visit - frankly who has time to put the together etc and clean out from the last time. Severe weather.

Although now with my numbers, I've realised I actually now need a few more carriers. I wouldn't have enough. I do have enough cages though which I keep in storage in the garage just in case.

I'm always worrying about this, two things in particular which is how on Earth will I catch Tonks before we're all crispy and I'm not sure if I'll find the snails quick enough :))

I'd like to think my cat would have the sense to get out herself but she really hates carriers so if I had to I would put her in one. It stresses her out to be trapped like that.

I admit I have never really thought of this although it's an excellent idea.

I don't have to worry too much about guinea pigs since the last fosters are now gone, but for the rats the carriers are stored on the shelves beneath the cages so it would just be a case of literally opening the cages and filling the carriers. They are more than happy to jump on you or come to you when the huge cage doors are opened so getting them packed quickly wouldn't be much of an issue here.

I suppose with the guineas you'd also need to make sure you grab some hay in case there is none available outside the home depending on the hour of the emergency.

My biggest dread is if there was a fire (either at mine or a neighbor )when nobody home. Either one would lead to no entry to save the pets!
