Hi I can't seem to get a good routine going re what to feed and when... I'm 4 weeing into having piggies but can't get the routine right as they seem to be starving at the wrong time. I was just wondering what works for others. I try and keep their veg to when we get them out so they know food is always there so only leaves me with hay and pellets thx

I feed fresh fruit and veg in the morning, put a bowl of pellets in at night which they graze on all day. Unlimited hay and they tuck into dandelions when they've grown in the neighbours garden . ;)

I don't have a routine. They have constant access to hay and pellets, and then they will get some veggies/fresh leaves from the garden randomly throughout the day. As they are grazing animals it never occurred to me that I should have some kind of routine for them. Should I?

I havnt a clue! Just read they like routine in that includes feeding times? They didn't seem to eat too much hay which is why I replenished fresh hay each morning so they not eating what they have rolled around n slept on. But if I put unlimited pellets in..tilly would be the size of a house ! She eats and eats

Hmm...I've only experience of 3 different guinea pigs, but they all seem pretty good at regulating their food intake. I've never fed anywhere near the amount of pellets indicated on the back of the packet as they just wouldn't eat that many. They quite often leave bits of fresh food (and I don't give excessive amounts of that either)

Hi, I feed ours in the morning (usually before I do the school run) & the get fresh veggies & hay and then another lot of fresh veggies, hay & pellets in the evening.
There is usually enough hay & pellets to last all day and they never eat it all.
However whenever they get their veggies (&they get some whenever they come out for lap time etc.) they clear the whole lot as they love veggies bless them & they'd just keep eating them all day if I didn't limit them lol

Morning time - usually 7.45 am - Breakfast - veggies and pellets
Dinner time - between 6 - 7pm - Veggies

Twice a day they get a fresh hay tray full of HAY... so they have access all day to hay.. x

Mine don't get unlimited pellets, the bowl gets one scoop a day, once it's gone, it doesn't get refilled, they have hay and lawn time to fill up on. ;)

Thanks everyone...that really helps. I wonder if I'm not feeding enough pellets but want them to eat more hay which is always avail but most of it just gets flattened in the hutch.

Do you not use a hay rack or something like that? I think piggies should always have some hay available that they can't sit on, so it stays clean.

First thing in the morning, I put out more pellets. I do not fill bowls, but give just enough to cover the bottom of the bowl.
After breakfast, I cut up their veg and greens, and fill up bottles with fresh water. I Always try to have the veg ready by 9.30 am but it does not matter if it is earlier or later.
After that, I fill up hay racks and do a poop sweep.

Hi 7 squeakers... I do have a rack but am about to open up the bottom level of the hutch and hope they use the ramp so couldn't decide if it should go up or down. With it having to be screwed into the hutch I had left it. I need to get it sorted defo like you say. They need some that they can't trample over... think it will save me in hay too! Can I just ask... the pic you have up of your piggie. How does he /she keep white? My timid...very timid flossy is that colour and long haired but her back ends looking messy and I gave her orange pepper the other day.... omg... she had a face full of orange after haha... Orange fur isn't a good look!

The kids are in charge of the guinea pigs (with supervision of course) so we do have a routine.

First thing in the morning they get a bowl of chopped vegetables and their pellets topped up.

When the kids come home at lunchtime they either cut grass and put the guinea pigs in their floor time run, or set up outside for grass time (this has happened very little this year due to endless rain).

When they come home from afternoon school we have lap time, and then the piggies are put back into their hutch. Water bottles are cleaned and filled and the hay rack is topped up.

Hi swissgreys So they get more hay at nite. Think I was going wrong giving them most of food later on. Most people give am for them to munch through day thx

mine get 1/8th cup pellets a day each at 8;10am before work and then get 1cup veggies each at 6:30pm then unlimited hay all day x

Not sure if this is ideal, but my daily routine is as follows;

4:30
Fresh filled bowl of veggies,
Large Filtered Water bottle,
Fresh hay,
Scoop of bephar Piggie biscuits,
(Eod) Sprinkle of Burges Mint piggies biscuits.

15:00
(Full cage clean)
Fresh Filtered water bottle
Fresh Hay

19:30
Hand feeding in small amounts.
Tubby: either carrot, parsley, apple or pair.
Dom: either, Cucumber, Corriander, apple, pair or water melon.

Fruit only once per week in very small portions.

I wake up between 530-630. Spot clean cage. Refill hay in hay rack and replace hay in hay trays. Wash out and refill water bottle. They get a cup of fresh veggies (2pigs) which usually includes red pepper, red leaf lettuce, parsley, once in a while cucumber and sometimes carrot, apple, kale as a treat. Then after work between 6-730 They get hay refilled in rack and trays and another cup of fresh veggies. Around 10-11 pm I give them each a small bowl with pellets only enough to fill the bottom and make sure they still have plenty of hay.
My pigs def know when it is meal time! Hope this helps!
