Eye Ulcer? Help

Hi there,

Just some update of my Barry's ringworm. I found one of his back feet is totally bald and a little bit red this morning. On the ankle part, it's scaly and white. I got Canesten solution from the vet yesterday. She still suggested we shouldn't give them any oral treatment before the results come out. When I applied the solution to barry's foot, he felt really uncomfortable and 'cried'(I assumed the sound was crying).

Should I take them to a more experienced vet for a second opinion? I've already spent over £200 on seeing this vet :( Even if I take them to a second one, will it be the same process to take a sample and wait for the test result? Can I bathe them with Nizoral shampoo?

I have heard that when you treat a fungal infection it can initially cause some type of burning feeling as the fungus is killed off (certainly human ladies treating Thrush report this!) If this vet is going to be offering the oral treatment I would hang in there for that - not every vet will prescribe this and an oral treatment will be the fastest solution. I would be wary of the 'human' shampoo as piggy skin is very sensitive and can be upset by bathing - people in other countries sometimes have no other option if their pig gets ringworm but in the UK we are lucky to have the targeted treatments.

I forgot from the original post but if Barry lives with other pigs check with your vet whether they all need to be treated at the same time because ringworm is very contagious. I know when mine have had mites (different thing but also contagious) they are all treated together - even if only one was showing symptoms.

Barry is living with Cisco and he also got small scaly patches on the nose and ear which have been treated by the topical solution.

Thank you!

I would get a second opinion from a more experienced vet. Is this vet a general?

I also wouldn’t bath them with nizoral. This was mentioned on another thread and it appears it’s for human and not piggy use.
