Hi everyone,

Just looking for a little post-vet advice if that's okay!

One of our piggies suffered an eye injury overnight (we cleaned them out the day before so we know it can't have happened before then as we always check our boys and give them a brush and cuddles before we put them back!)

As you can see, he has a red lump of flesh poking out, and it looks pretty sore. Our cage is very open with lots of soft things in, so we can only assume this has happened via hay poke or a claw incident (he has one cage mate).

Anyway, we immediately took him to the vet who gave him a full check over....nothing else seemed to be obviously wrong with him (his eye surface had a small scratch mark on it) and his behaviours have been completely normal since suffering the injury. The vet prescribed us Isathal eye drops, which we've been using all week.

Our question is has anybody else got any experience with this kind of injury? And if so, do you know how long it should take for it to look noticeably better? So far we haven't seen much of a change in his eye so I thought I would ask around!
Thank you for any help or advice :) xx

Oh that looks pretty sore, can't help you there though somebody else will though...

i would go back to a piggy savvy vet,to reassess the treatment.as it does seem to be not working with the present treatment.it looks sore.ive found with correct treatment hay pokes heal fairly quickly.Isthal eye drops are good, but you maybe dealing with a different bacteria or eye problem.:)

Thank you for the advice, we will have a look around and see if we can find somewhere, fingers crossed! :)

There is a vet locater I'm the green bar at the top of the screen if you are UK based. All the vets on it have been recommended by Forum members so you'll be in safe hands.

I was Anita to say there were by actually any near me but I checked and there is... 🤦🏻‍♀️

Aw brilliant, thank you (we are in the UK) :) x

I don’t think there are Cavy Savvy vets near me though... Or rescues, where I live there isn’t much of anything for guinea pigs, they don’t seem to be very popular pets around here... 🤔

I’m taking up all the replies here, I’ll stop now... Sorry 😂

Seem to be in! What is my problem today?
No he honestly seems fine in every way, I work from home and all our piggies live in my studio room, so I've been keeping a close eye on him. It just looks really sore and uncomfortable, but as far as i can tell, it's not bothering him... but obviously we want the lump dealt with in case it gets worse. Just hoping it's not a sign of something more ominous :(

Strange, hopefully it isn’t serious and will go away in a few days, no side effects, although I would say if the are going to be side effects it would be his vision 😬

We hope so too :) And yes! Eye injuries are so scary, he's only 2....too young to go blind :(

It’s best if you start your own thread in the health section so we can offer ongoing support on your specific case. This is an old thread and the OP has not been back on.

Here's my quote from a newer thread, it includes pictures :luv:

this is Tiggy after treatment. Picture was taken the next day.
(although their eyes weren't affected as badly as your little lady's appears to be) Both girls are back to normal now with no problems.

I'd definitely ring the vets today & ask to email photos in, hopefully they'll heal quickly :)
Oh edit... An appointment today is perfect :D xx

The longer eyes are left untreated, the more chance of complications occurring :(
Ask the vet if you can have some Loxicom (painkiller/anti inflammatory) too, as I expect it's painful.

Let us know how you get on. Good luck xx

Any advice on soothing a very bad pea eye?

Eyes need prompt treatment, so a vet visit is recommended for tomorrow if possible.
Any general vet should be ok, it doesn't have to be an exotic vet as eyes are fairly similar no matter what the species.

Healing vibes to your lil piggy xx

thank you for this! my guinea pigs growth seems to be a lot bigger so i’m hoping it’s nothing too serious as we only lost her companion around 4 weeks ago :(

that looks very nasty my guinea pig has the same currenly and we dont know what to do but it is at the top of her eyelid

Anything to do with the eyes is considered urgent. You should get piggy seen by a vet. The good thing is that eyes are treated the same for all animals, so you can take piggy to any vet and not just an exotic.
