Eye emergency.. Winny

so I have heard from specialist exotic vet Ellie.

She has said from the photos it looks like a corneal ulcer - she has advised Chloramphenicol and Remend corneal repair gel - hopeful that it will resolve in a week and if no improvement then we can consider emulation if we feel it is a source on ongoing pain.

Does anyone know if i can just buy those items online?

Owch looks painful :yikes:

I'd definitely try to keep on top of the loxicom & push for twice a day, see what your other vet says.

I've used Isathal & Remend together before (Remend is probably the the animal version of Viscotears?) also Tiacil is a very good alternative to the Isathal - I seemed to have a permanent bottle on standby in the fridge.
Orca always had eye issues & Tiacil on repeat prescription!

I used to use the Remend about an hour after the Tiacil/Isathal & Orca's eyes used to look awful, but then improved after a few days/week or so. She did finally go blind, but that was after years of eye issues.

Another girl of mine Dash had a seed in her eye, it was removed & the eye went the shape of a rugby ball, the vet thought it might need to come out, but luckily 10-14 days later you could hardly see the little scar on her eye. But she was on drops about 4-5 times a day for the first few days, then down to 2-3x daily after that if I remember correctly?
This is the Remend if you want to discuss with your vet?
Remend Corneal Repair Gel - 3ml

Hopefully the drops & painkillers will heal it quickly.

Fingers & paws all crossed for a full & speedy recovery.

Xx
Thanks very much - thats very useful. I have ordered some Remend just now so i have some in.. Do isathal and chloramphenicol do the same job?

OUCH!

It is very ulcerated so you cannot really tell but Nosgan's eye was looking worse and even Kim Maddock was unsure whether it could be saved. But he made it and even regained a degree of sight. Please get some artificial tear gel/lubricant; according to Kim it helps with healing process deeper in the eye where the isathal or chloramphenicol can't reach as well as with comfort on the eye and shifting the ulceration. Always wait at least half an hour to allow the isathal to be fully absorbed before applying it 3-6 times a day.

Better go for a second opinion and stronger meds if your vet insists on removal.

All the best.
Thanks - so isathal and chloramphenicol do the same job?

I have some Viscotears and my exotic vet said to use Remend Corneal gel - which i assume does the same job? I have ordered some though.

Isathal and chloramphenicol are both antibiotic eye drops/gel; chloramphenicol is the stronger of the two and generally used in the more serious cases. Remend is a lubricant based on hyaluronic acid so it is doing a similar job to the viscotears, which is just plain artificial tear fluid.

Thank your confirmation of that... I have it covered then!

Aww how is Winnie doing okay? Hope she's feeling a bit better and they manage to save the eye. I just wanted to say your post prompted me to go to the vets today as I noticed Winston's eye was slightly watery. It turns out it wasn't haypoke but is URI which otherwise would've gone unnoticed. (The watery eye was potentially an early symptom of this) so thanks! These posts are so helpful for others as it makes you look out for symptoms you might not otherwise notice and keeps you alert for illness. Take care ❤️

Glad you caught Winston’s URI so promptly.
Hope he recovers quickly.
I agree with you about posts being helpful.
Other people’s posts have certainly helped me.

@artcasper - hope Winny’s eye is beginning to heal now

Thank you! I think I've caught it just in time. The coughs are more noticeable now from the others. It's the odd cough here and there but doesn't sound nice big difference from yesterday. Luckily they've had a good days worth of antibiotics so hopefully I've caught it in time. And yes it just shows you how useful scrolling on this forum can be. Helps you stay alert! 🙂

Winny's eye is hopefully improving as the redness has definitely gone a little bit.

She really doesn't like me getting her out so much but is really good when I am doing the eye drops...

Fingers crossed for continued improvement..
