Extreme Ongoing Bloat

Oh no I am sorry :( Has your vet tried Flagyl which was suggested? What were the results of the fecal sample? I think my vet gave my poorly Ziggy something similar when she had the start of her heart failure, she said it was something to make her relaxed but I probably can't find out what until Monday, it definitely wasn't Buprenorphine as I don't like my piggies having it x

The only other thing I can suggest is to take a step back and think about the balance of meds. She is on a lot of gut meds, and what could have been a genuine bloaty stage is now being aggravated by all these meds affecting her motility.

I have seen first hand gut stasis as a result of incorrect use of gut meds- I dropped crunchie off st the vet one morning a day after a dental as she was bloating and not eating and I had to work. Unfortunately she was taken in by a non cavvy savvy vet due to being an emergency admittance (at my request), and when I picked her up she was in gut stasis with a stomach brimming of food but empty guts- my own vet corrected the med balance and she quickly recovered.

She's not on all they meds now, just Domperidone, Loxicom and gripe water.
How long is it even safe to give gripe water for?

He did talk about some kind of internal parasites, I can't remember what was said but he didn't think it was that..

I think the idea is that the Amitriptyline will help relax her which will hopefully ease her cystitis and bloat.

I've got to the point where I literally don't know what to do for the best. Different vets have different ideas of how to treat and I have no idea what to go with. It's been months since Toast was down at a normal non bloaty weight.

Didn't want to start a whole new thread for this, but Toast has just ate the tip of a teat from a baby bottle... the hole in the teat is a bit smaller than a 5 pence... I'm now panicking that this will get stuck or blocked and make her bloat situation 10 times worse? I'm not sure if she ate it whole or if she nibbled it in a few bits.. she's running about fine and drinking but I'm really worried it will cause a blockage

Toast has went down hill today. She's not eating hay unless I encourage her and even then she's not really eating much. She's not really wanting to move from her hay box either. Normally she runs around all day.

I feel like I should phone O.O.H vets but I don't know.. I'm offering her some mashed nuggets but she's not very interested in that either..

if Toast is detriorating maybe she needs to see an emergency vet,i have used a electric toothbrush to massage tummy with a bloated pig, given gripe water, but if toast is not improving i would suggest the vet.I really hope she gets better soon.:hug:s to you.

Ditto to Eileen.

Obviously you know her best, and whether you think she'll be okay until Monday but it does sound like she needs to see the vet. Is it the bloat causing it? If so, the the vet would be the best option.

It's not the same, but I was chatting to my vet about starting my pig in gut medication as he's very gurgly and sensitive and she said no, as med's can affect the stomach more.

Have you spoken with your vet about the slow withdrawl of the med's to see if that makes a difference?

I think you should go with your gut feeling, if you feel something is very wrong then ring the out of hours vets, maybe they could give her sub cut fluids at the least, it could even be something as simple as dehydration or pain xx

It seems that the pain from being bloated has put her off her food, which I think has caused dental issues again as she's trying to pick up hay and nuggets but is dropping them. I'm offering syringe feed now.

I phoned my vet who said to give her some Emeprid as she was really gassy and blocked up, it seems to have worked a bit as she seems more active now but clearly pain is a big issue here as she's off her food.

I've to give it an hour and if she's still the same or worse I've to take her in and get some pain relief by injection.

aww toasty I hope you feel better soon little lady and that the vet does not need to prod you with a needle to help. Sending healing hugs,

Really, really thinking of you and of both of you girls tonight.
Remember that at the end of the day you know your girl best, and you will instinctively know what she is capable of handling.
Cheering you and Toasty on as always.

Hope the emeprid works. If you do take her in for pain relief, don't let them give her buprenorphine as it slows the guts down x
It was buprenorphine. I did question it and he said it can make them drowsy.. she has had this before as an injection and I'm sure it helped... she also had an injection of Ranitadine and she's got a dose of Domperidone to get.

He tried to have a look at her teeth but she was having none of it and she was freaking out.

She's just sitting in her hay box doing nothing.. I'm really panicking now about the buprenorphine, but I can only go with what my vet advises really.. I'm going to sit up with her and offer syringe feed

Every pig is different, if she's had it before then go with that and don't worry. Was she not already on ranitidine? Iv found ranitidine and metacloprimide to be the best combo for shifting bloat x

I really hope Toast improves, you have done your best ,she will be pain free, which will give her the best chance to get her appetite back, even if it is syringe feeds.positive thoughts to you and Toast :)

She's been on everything before.. different doses and combinations and nothing really seemed to work long term. the vet felt those 2 injections would be best..

She's taken a few mls of syringe feed, a few strands of hay and some pepper. I'm going to leave her for an hour or so and try again with the syringe.

As always it sounds like you are doing everything possible for your amazing Miss Toast.
Let me know if you need me to send chocolate for YOU.
PM me your address and chocolate preference - remember you also need to be kind to yourself.

She doesn't really want to move much, I'm not sure if I should let her rest for a couple hours or keep trying to get her to move. being at the vets has massively stressed her out. I feel physically sick with worry

BIG HUGS - Do what you feel is best. You are doing all you can, please remind yourself of that.

The only hay I can get her to eat is Orchard Grass hay, which makes her bloated... catch 22 situation now.

She's ate a couple of nuggets, but only when I kind of hold it to her mouth and force it a bit. She'll only take water from a syringe and she's still not wanting to move unless I encourage her.

Last time this happened she ended up with gut stasis.

Buprenorphine can make some pigs extremely spaced out, my Petal looked glassy eyed & was not with it at all, she couldn't/wouldn't eat after having it & had an adverse reaction, even though it is the best for pain relief. I would stay up & monitor her closely, I am sorry you are having to go through this, I've been through it myself a few times & it's a horrible feeling. Have you got a massage pad you can sit her on? x

She's had it before and I'm sure it helped but this time she looks so spaced out and is acting really scared of everything. it's like she's just coming out of GA... it's horrible and I'm so angry with myself for agreeing to give it.

On the plus side she is pooing now, and is taking water from a syringe but I'm still really having to encourage her to eat hay and even then it's just strands..

How long did it take for Petal to come out of it?

A little while, they took her in because she collapsed, but it was almost the minute I got her home, she sat spaced out & I knew something wasn't right & when I picked her up clear fluid poured out from her, I was petrified :( They kept her in, gave her sub cut fluids & put her om Emeraid as she wouldn't eat, that was brilliant stuff, very high calorie & you don't need as much as critical care. All this happened 8 weeks post spay op, she had loose poops all that time too, it messed her guts up terrible so I completely understand what you are going through xx

That sounds awful. thankfully I've managed to get Toast to eat a small handful of hay and a couple nuggets.. I'm still having to push the hay up to her mouth, it's almost as if she's in a daze and can't focus..

I'm up at 7 for work so I'm thinking I should get a couple hours sleep but I'm so scared to take my eyes off her. I think she'd be okay until for a couple hours..
