Penelope has been having UTI’s off and on for some reason. The vet said her immune system probably isn’t what it used to be meaning that’s contributing to the UTI’s?

Anyways.. she went to the vet today and had them do a urinalysis to check for bacteria as her pee has been stinky again. I could hear her in the room when they did it and she was not happy. She has never been that vocal during it before. There was a lot of bacteria in her urine again so she will back on antibiotics. The vet did mention to me how vocal she was, clearly she was in discomfort when they were doing that.

However, on our way back home she is in pain. She was not in pain before this. She is still eating but is sitting puffed up. She had also started peeing blood now as well. There is definitely blood spots in her urine that I seen in her carrier. It seems like the expression of the bladder has caused this? I’m not sure if it may have pushed some sludge out and irritated her that way or the uti would be doing this? Just odd this wasn’t happening until the vet did that.

*I have plans on calling the vet in the morning. I noticed it after we left and they were closed. Just wanted to see what others thought or if they’ve had similar situations to this.*

Hi

It could be likely a traumatic response to the bladder expression. I second your plans of speaking to your vet. All the best.

She’s had her bladder expressed other times and this has never happened. I was very clueless on what would could’ve happened during that for her to be in pain now with visible blood in her urine.

My Pippin did exactly the same, she went in, had her bladder expressed and nothing interesting was really found apart from it was painful a year or 2 ago.

Upon getting her out the carrier at home she dripped blood all down my arm, we rushed her back and it was likely an already inflamed bladder made sore by the expression. She got antibiotics I believe and told to carry on with her metacam at a decent dose. She ended up with 2 bladder stones a year or so later which I don't think was related, but she passed those herself and has gabapentin + metacam daily, she had her bladder checked while she was getting checked for ovarian cysts just last week and it was absolutely fine, barely any reaction when expressed and there was no bleeding after.

Hope that's helpful! Fingers crossed your piggy is feeling better soon.

Thank you for this! This really helped me. I had called the vet and I didn’t really get any answers from them so thank you!

I think that’s what happened to Penelope too. She definitely had quite a bit of blood in her urine right after. She’s had her bladder expressed before but this has never happened to her. She seems to be doing better today and is on antibiotics for her uti. I’m hoping she keeps getting better. I just feel so bad she was in so much pain during all of that. :(

I hope pippin is doing well now. 💗💜
