Hello, well it seems lately one of my guinea pigs has been shedding A LOT whenever he's being petted in particular. I can easily pull some of his fur out (not hurting him, just a tiny tug and hair just comes out easy) and he literally leaves a small carpet behind on my clothes. It's been a concern of mine, and he has NO bald spots and it's usually near the back where most of the fur sheds. So, is this anything I should be concerned about? I just want to make sure my piggy is alright.

Hi and welcome to TGPF :)
It sounds like your piggie has mites...... you'll need to get a vet to check and prescribe some treatments.
You can also get some great products once you know for sure exactly what it is from Gorgeous Guineas :) she has soothing creams and shampoo's.
Good luck with your little man xx>>>xx>>>

Glynis, Velvet and Onyx x

Hey, thanks for the post. But are you so sure? I heard that piggies will get bald spots on their body when they have mites. Is that always the case?

I've never had a piggie with mites so i'm not able to give you first hand info..........
If you read into a few of the threads on here with piggies who've had confirmed mites you'll be able to get a better idea.
I'd be concerned tho if your piggie is loosing hair, there has to be a reason :{
Maybe it's the very start of mites? :{

I appreciate your input non the less. :)

But he has actually had this for AWHILE. Maybe months even, same excessiveness, but it doesn't look like he has lost hair. He's a short haired pig, and his fur is thick. I'm still a bit clueless, but I hope he is alright. 8...

What type of bedding is your little piggie on? could it be making him itchy perhaps? just trying to think of all possabilities for you ..........

Small Pine shavings.

The other two pigs do not seem to be having this problem either.

I would bathe him in GorgeousGuineas Manuka and Neem shampoo just to see if it improves the condition. This would be helpful for mites and fungal problems which both cause hairloss. Guineas don't normally shed as much as you discribe so something is going on...

Hi - that amount of hairloss seems to be a bit extreme, so I would take him to the vets to see what is the cause for his hairloss.

Vitamin C deficiency you can treat by either giving him a slice of pepper (any colour) twice daily at first, or (if he doesn't eat it), syringe him a dissolved bit of vit. C tablet twice daily, as much as he will take. DON'T put it in his water bottle, as you can control his intake. The good thing is that you can't overdose on vitamin C!

Hairloss is common in association with fungal problems, ie ringworm, not mites.
Does he have dandruff and are there any "bits" attached to the roots of the hair?

Actually, yes I see a slight white spec on the root when I tug the hair out. He has no MAJOR dandruff though. Only the little spec on the ends.
So, maybe this is it.

So, what should I do from here? 8:)

Thanks guys.
