Eddie doesn't quite seem himself

It’s only with you saying the funny smell was coming from his ear, obviously if the abscess hasn’t burst then it’s all contained and there isn’t a smell. I remember that smell very well 🤢
Sorry not trying to upset you! Hopefully you’ll get more info tomorrow and will know more about what’s going on.
How is he anyway? Still eating ok and stuff I hope x
That's true I didn't think about that...
Yes he's still eating and pooing ok, though I'm offering emeraid morning and night to make sure as his weight was going slowly in the wrong direction. Eddie and Elvis just had their tea and everything was scoffed down as normal. When he's sleeping he looks a bit hunched but as soon as he's up and moving about again he seems much brighter and happier.

Let us know how Eddie is and what the vet says. It's a worrying time for you.
I'll keep you updated :)

I’d have to say Bayril is unlikely to shift that abscess. Zithromax is the drug of choice for dental abscesses. Debbie @furryfriends (TEAS) is the abscess queen and may be able to advise on dosage of what Simon or Kim at the Cat and Rabbit Clinic would give him.
It was only a general vet Eddie went to today while I wait for his appointment with Nathalie the specialist tomorrow so hopefully she'll prescribe stronger antibiotics. I'll ask her about it. From what my dad said I got the impression the vet who saw Eddie today wasn't as cavy savvy as the other vets are as he suggested bathing where he'd drained the abscess even though it's inside his mouth...

I’m so sorry this has become so serious for Eddie, I hope Nathalie can get on top of this infection quickly.

Thinking about you and Eddie today, sending best wishes for a positive vet visit 🙂

Update (it's a long one 😂):

So it's not an ear infection causing the gunk it's what Nathalie called a neighbor disease probably because she couldn't remove the tooth she was hoping to remove during his surgery. So it is an infection but not actually from his ear and not an abscess like the other vet said yesterday (it seems unclear exactly what they thought was the problem as I didn't actually go and the vet who saw Eddie seemed less piggy savvy).

Nathalie took a sample of the gunk to send off to be tested so hopefully we'll know what kind of bacteria is in it and therefore what antibiotics will work best on it. However as he's already on antibiotics that may affect the result and it's possible nothing useful will show up.

She also checked his teeth and there's nothing that needs sorting out there yet so that's good for now.

And said also that if I need to email her individual email (rather than reception having to forward things to her) about a concern or a question even when she's not working or on call she will reply which is super nice and means I won't have to stress about immediately booking appointments 😊

Eddie is looking happy in himself and hasn't gone downhill like I was scared he would again. As well as keeping his teeth filed this will be another thing we have to manage because it can't be solved. The only way to get to the tooth would be through the eye which we've already tried and now it's closed up anyway. He may not live as long as maybe he would have done had he not had this complication but as long as he's happy and has a good quality of life hopefully with antibiotics I be able to manage things. In 7 days time when the results from the test come back we'll have a better idea of how to manage that.

So the remainder of the tooth that she didn’t manage to get out is causing the infection? Is that what you mean by a neighbour disease? I think you need to ask her what is going to happen to this tooth section in the future as it may still keep growing within the gum and sounds like it has the potential to grow out in an unlikely place if it is part of the root.
I would be very concerned if it was my guinea pig
Wishing Eddie all the healing vibes I can send x

:agr: I really hope Eddie is going to be ok but I really would worry too if he was my boy. I’ve never heard of neighbour disease?
Loads of healing vibes from us x

Sorry just realised I forgot to say yesterday that he is on 0.2ml Baytril and 0.23ml Metronidazole now (an antibiotic that works on bacteria that doesn't need air ) and continuing with Loxicom but if he seems to be doing fine without it not to give it as we don't want to give him medication unnecessarily.

I also asked about the gritty wee and it's just calcium that hasn't dissolved into the wee (probably because he has been drinking less) not a bladder issue. I'll be making sure he drinks more to help with that.

The whole tooth is still there so I would expect it can be burred down like all the rest but yes Nathalie thinks that it's a continuation of the infection that it caused before. Yes neighbor disease is a problem caused by a different problem so in Eddie's case that's his dental issues causing his eye to he pushed out and have to be removed and his ear problem.

Oh right I thought Nathalie had removed the tooth before he had his eye removed?
Well good luck, hope he recoveries from this infection very soon, the infection sounds like it is draining into his mouth and ear. I would definitely give him some pain relief as it is an anti-inflammatory as well

Sorry for the confusion, no the aim of the surgery was to remove the tooth as well as clear out the pus but Eddie's eye kept bleeding so Nathalie had to seal it up without removing the tooth.

Oh my goodness, so the doggy infected tooth is sealed up, but infection is leaking into his mouth and ear 😟 Poor little man, he must be feeling rotten, what a worry for you

Not too bad, thanks for asking :)

His ear is no longer gunky or smelly and he's doing fine without painkiller, no head tilting or anything like that. Physically he is fine but he just seems a little quiet... He doesn't rush to the hay pile when I put fresh in for example though he is moving about, eating and maintaing his weight as normal. He's got some small and soft poos but I'm assuming that's because if the antibiotics? I've been trying to give him ProC but he hates it and just let's it dribble back out his mouth (little monkey 😂) so I've ordered Fibreplex and I'm waiting for it to arrive.

I'm going to book a check up appointment for a 1-2 weeks time as it was around the 2 month mark that his teeth caused him problems last time so I want to get him checked out before then to get his teeth sorted before it becomes problematic again.

I hope Abigail is well again now? Xx

So pleased Eddie's ear is better, hope his teeth are ok when he has his check up. When Abi had antibiotics they upset her tummy so she had Pro-kolin from the vets and it really helped.
Abigail is ok, got another lump on her tummy so back to vets for another check up.
Sending Eddie lots of love and you best wishes x

After saying only yesterday that I was hoping to get Eddie's teeth sorted before it became a problem, Eddie is now showing the signs of needing his teeth doing :(
He's now not showing much interest in hay and his weight has dropped. He had some grass but he didn't finish the pile I gave him. He didn't manage to gain back what he lost last time so now he's even lower than before too (883g).

He is still wheeking for veg and is obviously hungry so that's good. He's been pottering around a bit just now.

I've put him back on loxicom and I'll be syringe feeding him. He's booked in for Monday.

Good luck at the vets with Abigail x

Poor Eddie! It's such a worry when he can't eat but wants to. It must be so confusing for him too.:( Healing wheaks being sent from my 3 girlies to Eddie and a hug from me to you!

Oh no, poor Eddie!

It's awful when they are clearly hungry but struggle - I remember those trying times I had with Odin.

The boys and I are sending lots of love and healing wheeks. Best of luck for the appointment, hope he improves soon 💗
